SFC: Budget Proposal Time

Congratulations! With the help of a lot of hard work and dedication from students across all interests and groups, the Student Activities Fee funded many exciting programs last semester. Among the amazing events, trips and activities were a Latino/a Heritage Month series, concerts at the Cat and the ’Sco, Karate lessons, widespread mobilization against the anticipated war on Iraq, countless productions put on by OMTA and OSTA, dance performances and efforts to build relationships with the surrounding community. The SFC anticipates that the events for this semester will be just as productive.
In addition to providing support and funding for activities during the semester, the spring means budgeting for student groups for next year. Each year the SFC facilitates the budgeting process, which takes over three weeks total. This year, SFC has made it a priority to be proactive in helping organizations prepare budgets. The following dates have been set for student groups in order to receive funding. Senior Adam Seidel and junior Monica Jackson will be reserving office hours on Thursdays for budgeting help. February 10 is Treasurer’s night. Attendance is important because Treasurer’s Night is a chance to review SFC procedures and go over the upcoming budgeting process. On Feb. 21 by midnight preliminary budgets are due to the SFC in Wilder 315. A liaison from the committee will be assigned to each proposal and will review it and offer suggestions during the following week. Final budgets are due on Feb. 28. Hearings will be held the week of March 1 to clear up any questions the committee might have about final budget proposals. Final budget decisions will be posted before Spring Break. Seidel said “the process works best when the committee guesses least” when talking about the detail needed in budgets. Please make use of the SFC treasurers, Seidel and Monica as well as myself, Laura Wallerstein while creating your budgets and throughout the semester. We can be contacted at osfc@oberlin.edu.
