Winter Term Sports recap
By Ryan Silakoski

While most students were protesting war in Washington D.C., or perhaps learning ballet for their Winter Term, the Oberlin College athletes were hard at work on campus throughout the month of January.

The men’s swimming team had three meets during January, two of which were NCAC events. Despite losing all three events, the men finished close against both John Carrol University and Kenyon College (losing 99-89 and 110-89 respectively).

With two meets left in the season including the NCAC Championships, the men hope to end on a strong note.

On the women’s side of swimming and diving things were just as tough, as they lost against the College of Wooster, John Carrol University, and Kenyon College.
Despite the tough losses, sophomore Kim Davis performed well, winning the 200-yard backstroke as a member of the squad that won the 400-yard freestyle relay against Kenyon College. Juniors Meagan Dunphy-Daly and Adrienne Zoller also won events.

The Yeomen basketball team continued their difficult season with nine straight losses, but ended Winter Term with a win against Penn. St.-Behrend College. Of these losses, more than half of them were very tight games and came down to the final seconds.

The women’s basketball team faired better during the month, tacking on four wins to their record and keeping competitive in five losses. The Yeowomen defeated Lake Erie College twice, Kenyon College and Hiram College.

On top of their victories, senior Malisha Richardson scored her 1,000th point in late January, a goal rarely accomplished during a college career.

The Yeoman indoor track and field team performed admirably as well. Two of these meets were unscored events while the third was the NCAC relays held at Denison University. At Denison, the men’s team made a strong showing, although they did not place.

The women’s indoor track and field team attended the same meets, placing 4th in the NCAC relays. The Yeowomen won the triple jump relay, and placed well in the 55m hurdles, the 800m relay, and the 5000m relay.
