1. Find and open Netscape

To do this, first pull down under the Apple menu to Internet, then choose Netscape.
When in Netscape, go to  the top bar, and pull down under "Communicator" to  choose "Composer"
A new blank page will appear!

Note: if you want to edit a page you have already created, once you have come to Netscape, go under "File" and choose "Open." Then choose "Page in Composer."

2. Type your name

  • Make it bigger by highlighting the name and choosing a larger the font size
  • Center it by clicking on choices for alignment that appear on the far right
  • Bold face by click on bold A
  • Change the color if you want by going under the box with colors and choosing a color
  • If you feel like it, choose a font by pulling down the style menu, then going to font.
3. Saving and Creating a Folder: Now, you will create a folder into which you will save all your "webstuff"--text and, very soon, pictures as well.First create and name your folder onn your desktop. Now Save your file in the folder you have created.   Choose a name for your file that has no spaces; the Composer program should add to the  file  the suffix ".html" automatically.

4. Insert a picture, preferably your picture.
Remember I took your pictures last week?   To find your picture, you will go back into Netscape and open www.oberlin.edu/~classer/History268/2002studentphotos.html
  • click and hold on your picture; then, when the dialogue box comes up, pull down to "Save this image as"
  • save the image into your folder with your name as its name, adding the suffix .jpg
  • now put your cursor back onto your page in composer where you want to insert the picture and then choose "Insert" and under that menu pull down to "Image"
  • then go to the box next to "choose image"--and go to your desktop folder, then locate your image, and choose it.  Your photo should now appear on the web page
  • you will probably want to shrink the size of your image.  Double click on the image on the web page, and a dialogue box called "Dimensions" will come up.  Choose "Custom" and "Constrain,"  and then choose a smaller number of pixels--perhaps 200 in the top box;the bottom box will adjust itself.

Save your file again.   As we say, "Save early and often."

5. Now you will write a brief bio of yourself in the space below your picture; think about how you want to describe your own personal history to get started. Where were you born? What events or people have mattered to you? How did you get to be the person you are now?

6.Include a link to your email--highlight the text that will link to your email, and then choose "insert link." Now type "mailto" followed by your email address.
7. Insert a link to the file for the syllabus
You will want to insert http://www.oberlin.edu/~classer/History268
remember that you will preface every link to a file on the web with "http://"
Save your file again.

8. Test your file with the internet preview, using the navigator-wheel button on the tool bar

 9. Play for a while; add other links, other pictures from the web, etc.  Enjoy yourself.

10. Now you will post your page to your website. To do this, you will find the program FETCH
You will find "Fetch" by opening "Internet" under the Apple menu.
You will be asked to supply the following information:
host: www.oberlin.edu

user ID: probably your first initial and last name

password: you should know this

directory: web

To post a file, use "Put." To take down a file to edit, use "Get." To check that your posting has actually worked, you will now open Netscape Navigator, type in your url and look. You may need to reload the browser on the machine..
Remember to Log out completely at the end of your session!

11.  VERY  IMPORTANT: Send me the url for your new page!! emai me at carol.lasser@oberlin.edu

12. For those who want to do further editing of photos or pictures:

Sometime, you may want to play with photographs. To do this you can use Photoshop on the public machines. You will usually find Photoshop as a "recent application." Otherwise, check under the applications menu. To make Photoshop work, you may have to check "Mode" to see that it is set either to "RGB Color" or "Indexed Color".
TO DO FURTHER EDITING LATER: Take your page down by opening Fetch (as above), and now you will "Get" file. Put the file on your desk top. Play with it, edit it, and then put it back onto the web by using the"Put" command.

If Fetch is open but not connected, go under File and choose "New Connection" in order to connect to the web, either to "Put" or "Get" a file.
