Selected Primary Sources in Women’s History

Jessica Grim, Reference Librarian

Major Collections of Primary Source Materials

Oberlin College Library has a rich collection of nineteenth-century books and periodicals published for, and about, women in the U.S..  The collections listed below have been included because they are apt to contain material relevant to the topic of women and social movements in relation to the Oberlin community in the antebellum years.

Locating Periodicals

19th Century Masterfile/Poole's Plus

This online index includes Poole's Index to Periodical Literature, 1802-1907, which is the most comprehensive index to popular American periodical literature for the nineteenth-century.  If you are looking for articles on particular TOPICS relating to women in “mainstream” periodicals, this is your resource.

History of women periodicals

                        Main Microfilm         .H6294 [234 reels]

This set includes many 19th century U.S. women’s magazines.  This is the only access we have to most of these periodicals!  For a list of periodicals included in this set, consult the guide (listed below), or search OBIS for “history of women periodicals” – then limit to the English language.  Unfortunately there is no separate indexing for these journals, so “browsing” them on microfilm is the way to find out what’s there.
