I am doing a project on games and toys with Gail Wood's third grade class this semester. We are going to talk about the toys and games that the kids use now, and then have them interview their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. I am hoping that this activity will give the students historical perspective, and help them to orient themselves within the realm of human experience. From here, we will move further back through history to early nineteenth century Oberlin. While the study of history is commonly focused on major events and leaders, we will focus on the daily lives of children and what they did during their leisure time. The class will divide up into small groups and each group will be given instructrions on how to make a toy or play a game. After the groups have mastered their task, they will present what they learned to the rest of the class. I think that this will be a fun way for students to involve themselves in the teaching and learning of history.
Additionally, I am doing a research project on Women's Athletics here at Oberlin in the early 20th century. Click here to see the results.
