Using AltaVista Forum for History 258

  1. Go to the AltaVista Forum homepage on Oberlin Online at http://www.oberlin.edu/avf98/aca-1/dispatch.cgi. (Note: There are links to this page on the course syllabus.)
  2. If you have not already registered this school year, register as a new user. Please give your real name as your username and make your password something you'll be able to remember.
  3. Log into AltaVista Forum as a registered user.
  4. Click on the "Discussion + Document Forum" for History 258.
  5. Open the folder for a particular week's assignment and read the posted topic(s).
  6. To respond to a topic, click on "Reply" in the pull-down "Entry-Tools Menu." A reply form will appear. Write your response and click "OK" to add it to the discussion for others to see.
  7. If you are using a public computer, be sure to quit your Web browser or the next user will be able to participate in AltaVista Forum disguised as you.

Using ERes for History 258

  1. Go to the ERes homepage on Oberlin Online at http://www.oberlin.edu/eres/. (Note: There is a link to this page on the course syllabus.)
  2. Enter hist258 as the course number.
  3. Click on the course link and enter the course password when requested.
  4. Click on the appropriate reading.
  5. The file either will open automatically in Acrobat Reader within your browser window, or it will be downloaded to your machine for access through Acrobat Reader. Acrobat Reader is standard software on the College's public computers. If you wish to download a free copy of Acrobat Reader for your personal machine, go to http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/download.html.
  6. If the type is too small to read, you can enlarge the page image either by using the magnifying glass icon on the Acrobat toolbar above the page image or by using the re-sizing drop-down menu on left end of the toolbar below the page image.
  7. Although Acrobat has print capabilities, you are encouraged to take notes using the on-screen version.
