EXWR 107-01

Practicum in Journalism

Instructions for Midterm Reports

In order to earn credit for EXWR 107 (Practicum in Journalism) students registered in the course need to turn in a midterm and final report of the work they have done for the class. Midterm reports are usually due in the box on Jan Cooper's office door (in King 139D) by 4pm on the Friday immediately preceding fall or spring break (depending on which semester you take it--see dates to find out the current semester's deadlines). They must be co-signed by a student's editor or publication coordinator. Editors and coordinators still need to turn in a report, but they do not have to get it co-signed by anyone.

There is a proper form for submitting a midterm practicum report. In the list of their work on this form students should include the titles and dates of any articles, photos, or illustrations that they have submitted. If they earned part of their credit by working in some area of the production of their publication (for instance layout or copyediting), they should be sure to list that work too. In order to receive credit, however, they must be sure to ask the editor or coordinator they worked for to co-sign their report before they turn it in (unless they are editors or coordinators themselves).

The instructor would also appreciate it if students would include in this report any thoughts they have on what they have learned thus far in the practicum. If writing about that makes a student's report longer than a page, that is fine. If they would like to evaluate the effectiveness of any guidance they have received, students should use this as an opportunity to do so. (This part of the report may be turned in separately from the part that is co-signed by the editor if a student prefers to keep these remarks confidential; please tell the instructor in the report if you'd prefer that your comments not be passed along to your editor or coordinator or if you'd prefer your name be withheld when they are conveyed.)

For questions about this report, feel free to stop by Jan Cooper's office in King 139 or email her at Jan.Cooper@oberlin.edu.

CAUTION: Practicum students who do not submit a report by the deadline will not receive credit for their practicum work.
