Paper 4: Representing Sexuality in the Media

Probably nothing is as hotly debated in American culture as the representations of sex and sexuality that our media feed us through the constant stream of print, broadcast and advertisement that surrounds us. Feminists and conservative moralists alike deplore it, politicians of every position use it to garner support, everyone feels entitled to critique it at the slightest provocation.

For this paper I'd like you to join that pervasive discussion in our culture by picking one representation of sexuality and analyzing it in depth. It can be something in print--either visual or verbal--or something you've seen broadcast on television, radio, or film. To enable us to understand your analysis, you'll need to at least describe the representation (reproduce a sample of it, if that's possible). But you should go beyond description to fully examine the effects of the representation on yourself and others. Why do you think this representation is something we should think about? Is it part of some larger discussion in the culture or academic circles? Should it be?

The first draft of this paper is due on Thursday, April 3. It is also possible to substitute a paper for another class for this assignment, if you'd prefer. If you choose that option, however, please okay it with me first.
