TO COMPLETE YOUR APPLICATION submit the following along with this cover sheet:

  1. One essay (no more than about five typed, double-spaced pages, 12 point font, 1 inch margins) that details what you propose to do as a Watson Fellow abroad, and why. Please see the handout "Applying for a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship" for more guidelines.
  2. Another essay (also no more than about five typed, double-spaced pages) that focuses more broadly on yourself, making clear how this proposed project grows out of your experiences and concerns. Include any additional information -- your long-range vocational purpose and plans, family background, Winter Term projects, travel experience, or other items -- which you think would help the Committee evaluate your project.
  3. Two references to be submitted by noon, Oct. 1 to the Fellowships Office. Please provide the appropriate forms for your recommenders, available on this site: www.oberlin.edu/lmcmilli/ref_form.htm.

Names of two people whom you have asked for references. At least one of them should be on the Oberlin College faculty.

  1. A list of extracurricular activities. This need not be a formal resume; a simple list with dates will do.
  2. One official transcript. Have the registrar send it to the fellowships office or send it yourself.

Deadline and Process: In order to be considered, this form and all supplementary materials (references and transcripts) must be returned to the Office of Fellowships, Peters G28, no later than 12:00 noon, Friday, October 1, 2004. The committee will interview 8-12 applicants. Interviews of selected applicants will take place before fall break; arts applicants should be prepared to demonstrate their talents for the interview (by means of a video, portfolio, short demonstration). From those interviewed, four finalists will be selected; final applications are due to the Watson Foundation in early November.
