I received my B.S. degree from Cornell University and my M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. My specialty is Chinese politics, on which I have published five books and dozens of articles on local politics, popular participation, and political economy. I teach about these subjects as well as Asian politics and political economy, Marxist theory, and comparative politics. My current research focuses on two projects: workers' politics in contemporary China, and the political economy of urban space in a small Chinese city.
This video profile concerns my teaching and its relationship to my scholarship. It also explains how I reconcile my politics with owning a sports car.
