The predecessors of Erik Loyer's work are much less earlier hypertexts and the print books that came before them, but film and web sites. Loyer is responding to the limitations of many web pages that consist only of mouse rollovers, hypertext links, and on the most high-tech sites, animated transitions and sound effects. Even if read merely as a website, Chroma's interface is groundbreakingly playful and liberating. Being able to simply pass the mouse over a page to make it respond is a new experience for web-surfers and hypertext readers alike. The text calls for a reader to have more freedom in the performance of the text because this is Chroma's form of multilinearity.
