Oberlin College, UAW Agree on New Contract
October 22, 2008
OBERLIN, OHIO—Oberlin College and the United Auto Workers, which represents 175 service employees, have reached agreement on a new three-year contract. Service employees, represented by UAW Local 2192, voted on a tentative agreement on Friday, October 17 and ratified the contract, which is effective September 30, 2008.
“The agreement is the result of a collaborative effort between the Union and the College and a mutual desire to achieve a contract that was both fair and equitable,” said Vice President for Finance Ron Watts. “Reaching agreement on a new contract is never easy, but the respect and trust exhibited throughout the negotiations made this contract possible.”
The provisions of the agreement are in line with the contracts of the other bargaining units at the College. “The College has the utmost respect for all of the union employees,” said Watts. “The work they do is vital to Oberlin maintaining its position as one of the nation’s leading Colleges.”
The service employees covered by the new contract include athletics equipment handlers, custodians, food service employees, groundskeepers, maintenance technical staff, service/transportation employees, and tradespeople.
