DECEMBER 7, 2000--Members of the Oberlin Peace Activist League (OPAL) will take part in an Interfaith Vigil for a Death Penalty Moratorium at 3:30 P.M. Sunday, December 10, at the bandstand on Tappan Square.

Chemistry Professor Norm Craig Helps Create Carnegie Art Museum Exhibit. (December 6, 2000)
DECEMBER 6, 2000--The new exhibition at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum of Art, Aluminum by Design: Jewelry to Jets, has more than one Oberlin connection. During the planning stages the curator, Sarah Nichols, got in touch with Norman Craig '53, Biggs Professor in the Natural Sciences Emeritus, to tap his knowledge of Charles Martin Hall, Oberlin Class of 1885, the American chemist who discovered an economical way to refine aluminum.

Neal Creque Dies at 60, Taught Jazz Piano at Oberlin Since 1988. (December 4, 2000)
Neal Creque, teacher of jazz piano at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music since 1988, died on Friday, December 1, following a lengthy illness. He was 60 years old.

CSL Receives Grant to Distribute Books to Head Start Students. (December 4, 2000)
DECEMBER 4, 2000--"Owning books and reading at home correlate with success in school," says Caitlin Scott, assistant director for youth education at the Oberlin College Center for Service and Learning (CSL). Oberlin students and staff of the CSL have a longtime interest in teaching reading to area youngsters, but now--with a grant from First Book and the Make a Difference Day project--the center's workers and volunteers have another tool to help in their work: free books for the children.

Experimental Filmmaker to Screen Works at Oberlin College November 30. (November 27, 2000)
OBERLIN, OHIO--Experimental filmmaker Rian Brown-Orso, who describes herself as a "time-based image maker," will screen three of her works--Presence of Water, Saca Una Foto and The Settler--Thursday, November 30 at 8 p.m. at Oberlin College.

Grants-in-Aid Fund Research for Eight Faculty Members This Fall. (November 24, 2000)
NOVEMBER 24, 2000--The College's Committee on Research and Development recently distributed $19,250 in grants-in-aid for six faculty projects. The awards fund travel for projects across America and in Europe and for research projects in Oberlin.

Secretary of the Treasury to Speak at Oberlin College December 4. (November 22, 2000)
Oberlin, Ohio--U.S. Secretary of Treasury Lawrence H. Summers will discuss "Economic Challenges and Priorities in the New Economy" in a noon assembly to be presented Monday, December 4 at Oberlin College.

Obies Head for Georgia to Protest. (November 20, 2000)
NOVEMBER 20, 2000--About a hundred Oberlin College students piled into buses destined for Fort Benning, Georgia, around 5:00 Friday afternoon to protest the School of the Americas, recently renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. The protest was planned for this past weekend. The students were part of the national School of the Americas Watch (SOA Watch).

Ohio Prison Activist Conference to be Held at Oberlin This Weekend. (November 10, 2000)
NOVEMBER 10, 2000--The 7th Annual Ohio Prison Activist Conference will be held on the Oberlin College campus today and tomorrow, November 10 and 11. The conference, sponsored by Oberlin Action Against Prisons (OAAP) and the Dayton American Friends Service Committee Criminal Justice Program, will gather together student activists, ex-prisoners, attorneys, and other prisoner advocates interested in gaining suffrage for incarcerated Americans.

Historical Images of Downtown Oberlin Topic of Symposium to Be Held in Public Library Next Week. (November 8, 2000)
NOVEMBER 8, 2000--A new online database of more than 400 historical images of downtown Oberlin will be inaugurated November 15 at a free public symposium, "Our Common Center," featuring a talk by Steven Litt, art and architecture critic of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Dr. Carolynn Lindeman (Bmus '62), professor of music at San Francisco State University and past president of MENC: The National Association for Music Education, has been appointed by President Bill Clinton to the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Defense Expert Pierre Sprey to Talk at Oberlin College November 15. (November 2, 2000)
OBERLIN, OHIO--"The Defense Paradox: More Dollars, Less National Security" is the title of a free, public talk to be presented by defense expert, aeronautical engineer and statistician Pierre Sprey Wednesday, November 15 at 4:30 p.m. in Hallock Auditorium, located in Oberlin College’s Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies, 122 Elm Street.

Human Rights Activist Ward Morehouse to Speak at Oberlin College November 9. (November 2, 2000)
OBERLIN, OHIO--Seasoned human rights activist Ward Morehouse will speak on "Democracy, Corporations, and Human Rights" at Oberlin College Thursday, November 9. This free public lecture will take place at 4:30 P.M. in Wilder 101, and will be followed by a reception in Room 112. The Oberlin College Office of Chaplains is sponsoring Morehouse's campus visit.

Oberlin’s Chemistry Week Celebration to Feature “Art Conservation: Where Science and Art Meet”. (November 1, 2000)
NOVEMBER 1, 2000--Bruce Christman, a conservator for the Cleveland Museum of Art, will present "Art Conservation: Where Science and Art Meet" for the chemistry department's Seminars in Chemistry series next week. The November 8 talk, celebrating National Chemistry Week, will be at 8:00 P.M. in Kettering 9. The department is hosting a reception (with refreshments) for the speaker at 7:45 in the Kettering Lounge.

OCTOBER 31, 2000--For the third year in a row, a contingent of Oberlin students will take part in the November national protest demanding the closing of the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA) at Fort Bennings, Georgia.

Pultitzer Prize Winning Author Taylor Branch to Visit Oberlin November 4. (October 26, 2000)
OBERLIN, OHIO--Pulitzer Prize winner Taylor Branch--author of a monumental study of America in the Martin Luther King years--will visit Oberlin College and community, Saturday, November 4 as part of the Friends of the Library annual celebration.

OBERLIN, OHIO--Fans of opera and musical theater are in for a rare treat. The creative talent responsible for such disparate works as Fiddler on the Roof, Angels in America, The Crucible, Coyote Tales and The Seduction of a Lady will gather on the same Oberlin stage for a conversation about what it takes to mount a production.

Early 20th-Century Austrian and German Music Featured in Oberlin Conservatory Chamber Concert November 3. (October 25, 2000)
OBERLIN, OHIO--The music of Alban Berg, Arnold Schönberg and Kurt Weill will be among the works featured in a program highlighting early twentieth-century Austrian and German music at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. The chamber concert, which is free and open to the public, showcases Oberlin Conservatory faculty, students and an alumna. It will be held Friday, November 3, at 8:30 p.m. in Kulas Recital Hall, located at 77 W. College Street, Oberlin.

Cleveland Chamber Symphony Premieres Jeffrey Mumford's "a still radiance within dark air" November 20. (October 23, 2000)
OBERLIN, OHIO--Jeffrey Mumford, newly appointed assistant professor of composition at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, will offer a world premiere of "a still radiance within dark air" in a new orchestration. The Cleveland Chamber Symphony, conducted by Andrew Rindfleisch, will perform the piece on Monday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m., in Drinko Recital Hall, located on the campus of Cleveland State University. Robert Shannon, professor of pianoforte at Oberlin, will be guest soloist. The concert is free and open to the public.

College Street, in Oberlin. The free concert--held in memory of Kenneth Hall Woodside (1938-1999), an Oberlin alumnus--will include chamber works by Saint-Saëns, Ibert, Ravel and Brahms.

Oberlin, Ohio--Five of the nation's leading environmental thinkers gathered on the Oberlin College campus recently for a symposium titled "The Ecology of the Second Industrial Revolution." The symposium was part of a two-day event that marked the dedication of the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2000--The Oberlin College Center for Service and Learning (CSL) has been involved in tutoring local elementary school children for several years, but this fall the CSL will help set in motion a new program for third- and fourth-graders at Prospect Elementary School.

Oberlin Students Develop Mathematics of Amusement. (September 13, 2000)
SEPTEMBER 13, 2000--Michael Cardiff and Gwyneth Hughes spent last year's Fall Break at Walt Disney World, recuperating from strenuous but as-yet unsuccessful efforts to find an interesting final-project topic for my Optimization class (Math 331). Then they hit on it. Less than a year later, Cardiff and Hughes delivered a talk about their final project--"Maximizing Fun at a Theme Park"--to a standing-room-only audience at the 18th International Symposium on Mathematical Programming (ISMP), held in Atlanta.

Work of James Burrows '62 Leads to 3 Emmys in Sunday's Awards Ceremony. (September 13, 2000)
SEPTEMBER 13, 2000--Legendary television director James Burrows '62 has another award to put on his mantel. Sunday night Will and Grace, the critically acclaimed NBC-TV show that Burrows helms as executive producer, was named Outstanding Comedy series by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Oberlin College Brings National Expert to Discuss Racial Inequality in U.S. Today. (September 11, 2000)
OBERLIN, OH--As we enter the 21st Century, how has the structure of racial inequality in the United States changed? To answer that question, Lawrence D. Bobo, one of the country’s leading experts on the fabric of current racism and a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar, will present a lecture titled A Color-Line for the 21st Century?-- Laissez-faire Racism and the Status of African-Americans this Thursday at Oberlin College.

Second Annual Reischauer Scholarship Awarded. (September 8, 2000)
OBERLIN, OHIO--Oberlin College is pleased to announce the awarding of the Ambassador Edwin O. Reischauer Scholarship to Takahiko Yoshioka, a graduate of St. Mary’s School, Tokyo, Japan.

Psychology Professor Takes Students into Nationwide Collaborative Research under $1.5 Million Grant. (September 6, 2000)
SEPTEMBER 6, 2000--Oberlin senior Dan Weiskopf and other members of the Visual Cognition Laboratory at Oberlin College will have the chance to collaborate with researchers from around the country, thanks to a $1.5 million grant to a network of scientists studying human expertise in object recognition. The grant includes $40,000 to James Tanaka, associate professor of psychology.

Abolition and The Underground Railroad: Exhibition, Living History Showcase, and Lectures by Dr. James Oliver Horton. (September 1, 2000)
OBERLIN, OHIO--Just as the 1858 Oberlin Wellington Rescue--which gave rise to Oberlin's reputation as "the town that started the Civil War"--was a joint venture on the part of townspeople, faculty and students, so, too, is a multi-faceted program focusing on the abolition of slavery presented this month by five community groups.

Music by J.S. Bach, Mozart and Stravinsky considered great masterworks in their respective eras will be performed by members of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music faculty Sunday, September 10 as the first concert in the seventh annual Faculty Chamber Music series.
