International Opera Project by Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Performing Arts at Trinity Cathedral Features Performances in Cleveland and Buenos Aires
DECEMBER 22, 2003—Many cast members of the upcoming Cleveland productions of Dido and Aeneas and Gianni Schicchi at Trinity Cathedral are finishing their preparations wearing T-shirts and shorts. It’s not that they are impervious to winter weather; they are 5,200 miles away in a different season.

DECEMBER 18, 2003—Mentoring is the focus of ARTISTS choose ARTISTS, a Cleveland exhibition conceived by Oberlin College Young-Hunter Professor of Art John Pearson to showcase the unique connection between young artists and their teachers.

Oberlin Student Wins Third Prize at Prestigious Wieniawski International Violin Competition
DECEMBER 5, 2003—Ui-Youn Hong, a first-year violin performance major and a student of Assistant Professor of Violin Kyung Sun Lee, won third prize in the junior division of the Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition for Young Violinists, held in Lublin, Poland, in September.

Four Oberlin Conservatory Students Win Concerto Competition
DECEMBER 4, 2003—Prokofiev was the composer of the hour—and the lucky charm—at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music’s 2003 Concerto Competition, held Saturday, Oct. 11, in Finney Chapel.

Renowned Tallis Scholars Bring Renaissance Sacred Music to Oberlin Dec. 2
NOVEMBER 20, 2003—"Anyone familiar with Renaissance music knows that this group has attained superstardom." That’s what the Boston Globe had to say about the Tallis Scholars, the renowned ensemble that has been a leading exponent of Renaissance sacred music since 1973.

Oberlin College Appoints Music Critic and Historian James Keller to Luce Professorship of the Emerging Arts
NOVEMBER 12, 2003—Music critic and historian James M. Keller, a 1975 graduate of Oberlin College, has been named the College’s new Henry R. Luce Professor of the Emerging Arts, effective July 1, 2004. This is a faculty position in both Oberlin’s Conservatory of Music and the College of Arts and Sciences.

Violin Virtuosa Ida Haendel to Perform at Oberlin Nov. 18 as Part of Artist Recital Series
NOVEMBER 4, 2003—She is one of the most venerated musicians of our time, and on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 8 p.m., she will appear in concert at Oberlin College’s Finney Chapel.

OCTOBER 29, 2003—More than 50 of the country’s most distinguished lawyers, law professors, social scientists, judges, and activists—all Oberlin College graduates—will convene at Oberlin College next month for a national conference titled "Law and Social Change in the 21st Century."

Dance Diaspora Takes African Dance to Appalachia During Fall Break
OCTOBER 16, 2003—For the second consecutive year, Oberlin’s Dance Diaspora will spend part of the College’s fall recess introducing schoolchildren in Appalachia to the traditions of Africa and its influences on cultures around the world.

Six Oberlin Professors Named "Top Classroom Instructors" by NOCHE
OCTOBER 16, 2003—Six Oberlin faculty members have been recognized as "creative and innovative teachers" by the Northeast Ohio Council of Higher Education (NOCHE), the representative body and professional organization for 21 universities and colleges in northeast Ohio.

SEPTEMBER 25 , 2003—"Post-War Iraq: A View from the Ground" is the title of an address to be presented by William L. Nash, senior fellow and director of the Council on Foreign Relation’s Center for Preventive Action, Tuesday, September 30, at Oberlin College.

SEPTEMBER 29 , 2003—Not only is the Student Union’s Sco’ a much-frequented disco and gathering place, but it has just garnered the College a distinctive place on the Honor Roll of Spin magazine.

Although the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s 50th anniversary Jazz at Oberlin concert, set for Saturday, October 4, 2003, in Finney Chapel, has sold out, fans without tickets have two listening options.

Oberlin College Presents Tres Vidas October 3
SEPTEMBER. 5, 2003—Oberlin College will continue its observance of Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month with Tres Vidas, a multi-art celebration of three legendary Latin American women Friday, October 3, at 8 p.m. The event, which is being sponsored by La Casa Hispánica, The Sue Carroll Smith Fund, and Department of Hispanic Studies, will take place in Warner Center, 30 N. Professor Street. Tickets are $3 at the door.

Eminent Theologian Stanley Hauerwas to Speak at Oberlin College Sept. 14
SEPTEMBER. 5, 2003—Stanley Hauerwas—one of the most respected and controversial theologians in the United States—will give a free public talk Sunday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Oberlin College’s Lewis Center for Environmental Studies, 122 Elm Street.

The Riverside Company Partner Stewart Kohl Named Oberlin College Trustee
SEPTEMBER 5, 2003—Oberlin College alumnus Stewart A. Kohl, managing general partner of The Riverside Company, has been appointed to the College’s Board of Trustees.

Oberlin College to Host Stem Conference Sept. 5-7
SEPT. 2, 2003—Some 90 academic leaders from throughout the United States will meet at Oberlin College’s new science center Sept. 5 through Sept. 7 for a conference exploring ways undergraduate institutions can increase the number and quality of students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
