Steven Smith, Assistant Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra, to Join Oberlin Conservatory Faculty. (May 23, 2002)
MAY 23, 2002-- Assistant Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra Steven Smith is joining the faculty of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College. Robert K. Dodson, dean of the Conservatory, announced that Smith would be visiting associate professor of conducting and music director of the Oberlin Conservatory orchestras effective July 1, 2002.

Oberlin College Students to Live/Work in Asia. (May 20, 2002)
MAY 20 , 2001-- This summer, under the auspices of Oberlin Shansi eight Oberlin College students will journey to Asia to live and work for two years as Shansi Fellows and two other students have received $1,000 Oberlin Shansi grants for summer research projects in Asia.

Middle East Expert is Oberlin College Baccalaureate Speaker. (May 20, 2002)
MAY 20, 2002-- Charles M. Sennott—a veteran newsman currently covering the war on terrorism from the Middle East and the author of The Body and The Blood: The Holy Land's Christians at the Turn of a New Millennium -- will present Oberlin College's 2002 Baccalaureate Address on Sunday, May 26.

Cleveland Gallery to Showcase Oberlin College Student Art May 24-27. (May 9, 2002)
MAY 9, 2002--A juried show of outstanding Oberlin College student art will be on view in a special three-day exhibition at the Oberlin College Gallery & Performance Space at Here Here in downtown Cleveland this month.

Legacy: They Speak in Dreams on View at the Oberlin College Gallery & Performance Space at Here Here. (May 3, 2002)
MAY 3, 2002-- Tai Collins' Legacy: They Speak in Dreams--the first senior student installation at the Oberlin College Gallery & Performance Space at Here Here in Cleveland--opens Saturday, May 4 at 8:00 P.M. with a cabaret concert performed by a group of student artists, musicians and dancers.

Oberlin Conservatory of Music Violin Student Julia Sakharova Wins Koussevitzky Competition. (May 3, 2002)
MAY 3, 2002--Violinist Julia Sakharova, a student of Professor of Violin Milan Vitek at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, has won first prize in the Musicians Club of New York's 47th Olga Koussevitzky Competition for Strings, held at the National Arts Club in New York City April 4, 5, and 8. She brought home $2,500 and instructions to leave room on her calendar for a New York recital in fall 2002.

Charlotte Baker to Receive Oberlin College 2002 Community Service Award. (May 2, 2002)
MAY 2, 2002-- The recipient of Oberlin College's 2002 award for distinguished service to the community is Charlotte Owens Baker.

Cancer Warrior Dr. Judah Folkman is Oberlin College Commencement Speaker. (April 30, 2002)
APRIL 30, 2002-- "Cancer Warrior" Dr. Judah Folkman will present the address at Oberlin College's 2002 Commencement program Monday, May 27 on Tappan Square, where more than 700 students are expected to receive degrees. The ceremony marks the 169th Commencement at the college--the first in the U.S. to admit students regardless of race or gender.

Oberlin College to Return Lost Item to Nez Perce Tribe April 27. (April 19, 2002)
APRIL 19, 2002-- A woven item belonging to the Nez Perce Tribe that had been lost in the ethnographic collections of Oberlin College's anthropology department for over 100 years will be returned to the tribe on Saturday, April 27.

New Oberlin Congresswoman to Speak April 29 at Oberlin College. (April 19, 2002)
APRIL 19, 2002 -- "A Conversation with Marcy Kaptur" is the title of a public talk to be given April 29 at Oberlin College by Marcy Kaptur, the Democratic representative of the newly drawn 9th U.S Congressional district that includes Oberlin and Amherst. Oberlin College President Nancy S. Dye will introduce the speaker.

International Conference on Secularism in India to be Held at Oberlin College. (April 16, 2002)
APRIL 16, 2002--The dilemmas of secularism and faith in India as well as in the modern world will be explored by some 20 scholars and activists from the U.S. and abroad when they converge on the campus of Oberlin College for an international conference Friday through Sunday, April 19-21.

Dance Diaspora to Perform on Oberlin College Campus April 25, 26 and 27. (April 12, 2002)
APRIL 12, 2002-- Authentic dance from West Africa and Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban dance from the New World will be performed April 25, 26 and 27 at Oberlin College, when Essence presents Dance Diaspora in concert.

Apollo's Fire Brings Mozart Program to Finney Chapel April 27. (April 9, 2002)
APRIL 9, 2002-- The Artist Recital Series at Oberlin College concludes its 123rd season with an all-Mozart program by Apollo's Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, on Saturday, April 27, at 8:00 P.M. in Finney Chapel, located at the corner of Professor and Lorain Streets. Tickets can be purchased from Oberlin's Central Ticket Service (440-775-8169) and are priced at $10 for students; $22 for seniors and Oberlin faculty, staff, and alumni; and $24 for the general public.

MARCH 25, 2002--Oberlin College will conclude its annual Convocation series with an address by Paul Duguid Thursday, April 9. Duguid's free, public talk, The Social Life of Liberal Education, will take place at 8:00 P.M. in the College's Finney Chapel, located on the corner of N. Professor and W. Lorain Streets.

Civil Rights Activist Julian Bond to Speak at Oberlin College April 3. (March 25, 2002)
MARCH 25, 2002--Oberlin College continues its annual Convocation series with an address by Civil Rights activist Julian Bond Wednesday, April 3. Chicana Author and Performance Artist to Appear in Oberlin April 7. (March 13)

FEBRUARY 28, 2002-- Vassar Professor Gretchen Gerzina will discuss slave autobiographical writing in a lecture titled "Mobility in Chains: Travel Writing in the Early Black Atlantic" at 7 P.M. March 12 at Oberlin College.

Barbara Bonney Performs in Oberlin on March 3. (February 27, 2002)
FEBRUARY 27, 2002-- Internationally acclaimed soprano Barbara Bonney, joined by pianist Margo Garrett, will perform works by Schumann, Schubert, and Liszt in "Songs from the Cycles" on Sunday, March 3, at 8:00 P.M. in Finney Chapel, located at the corner of Professor and Lorain Streets in Oberlin. Griot Papa Susso to Visit Oberlin Next Week as Part of Black History Month Celebration. (February 21, 2002)
FEBRUARY 21, 2002-- Alhaji Papa Susso, kora* virtuoso, traditional musician and an oral historian who descends from a long line of griots in Gambia, West Africa, will come to Oberlin next week to take part in Oberlin's black history month celebration.

Upward Bound and Oberlin College Celebrate 25 Years. (February 19, 2002)
FEBRUARY 19, 2001-- Oberlin College and Upward Bound will celebrate 25 years of service and accomplishments as part of National Trio Day on Saturday, February 23, 2002 at the Oberlin College Adam Joseph Lewis Research Center for Environmental Studies Auditorium located at 122 Elm Street in Oberlin. Festivities begin at 10:00 A.M. City of Elyria Law Director, Terry Robinson, an Upward Bound participant and Oberlin College Graduate will be the keynote speaker. It is free and open to the public.

Sherman Alexie to Speak at Oberlin College March 5. (February 19, 2002)
FEBRUARY 19, 2001-- Author, poet and screenwriter Sherman Alexie will present the fifth lecture in Oberlin College's 2001-2002 Convocation series at 8 P.M. Tuesday, March 5. The title of his address is "Killing Indians: Myths, Lies and Exaggerations."

Oberlin College Students to Host Asian Pacific American Conference March 1-3. (February 12, 2002)
JANUARY 12, 2002--"Transcending Boundaries: Communities, Crisis and Resistance" is the title of the 12th Biennial Midwest Asian Pacific American (APA) Conference, which will bring noted Asian Pacific American (APA) activists, scholars and artists to Oberlin College Friday, March 1 through Sunday, March 3 under the auspices of the student-led APA Conference Committee.

Homilectic Expert David Buttrick to Speak at Oberlin College February 17. (February 8, 2002)
FEBRUARY 8, 2002-- The Reverend David G. Buttrick, a national leader in the field of homiletics, will be the featured speaker Sunday, February 17 at the first vesper service of second semester at Oberlin College. The title of his sermon is "The Devil You Say....".

Charles Beebe Martin Classical Lectures Visit Oberlin February 11-15. (February 6, 2002)
FEBRUARY 6, 2002-- Ian Morris, professor of classics and history at Stanford University, will present the Charles Beebe Martin Classical Lectures 2001-2002 at Oberlin College February 11-15. These free, public lectures will take place in room 106 of the King Building, located on the corner of East College and South Professor Streets.

Norma Field to Speak About Japanese Military Sexual Slavery on February 11. (February 6, 2002)
FEBRUARY 6, 2002-- Norma Field, professor of East Asian Languages at the University of Chicago, will deliver a lecture February 11 at 7:00 P.M. in the Oberlin College Environmental Studies Auditorium. The lecture is titled "National Crime, International Justice: The Case of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery."
