Singers from Oberlin to Perform with The Cleveland Orchestra June 5 and 7
MAY 21, 2003---The Cleveland Orchestra has engaged three singers from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music to perform as soloists in its concert production of Verdi’s Don Carlo, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst, at Severance Hall Thursday, June 5, and Saturday, June 7. Both performances are at 7 p.m. Robert Porco and Betsy Burleigh are preparing The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus for the performances.

Jewish Renewal and Conscious Aging Founder is Oberlin College Baccalaureate Speaker
MAY 13, 2003---Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi--considered "the great sage of a worldwide movement of Jewish renewal" (Visionaries: People & Ideas to Change Your Life) as well as the grandfather of the conscious aging movement--will present the 2003 Baccalaureate address Sunday, May 25, at Oberlin College.

Cellist Darrett Adkins to Join Oberlin Conservatory of Music Faculty (May 8, 2003)
MAY 8, 2003---Cellist Darrett Adkins is joining the faculty of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College. Robert K. Dodson, Dean of the Conservatory, announced that Adkins would be Assistant Professor of Cello beginning in the fall of 2003.

Four to Receive Honorary Degrees at Oberlin College's 170th Commencement (May 5, 2003)
MAY 5, 2003---Oberlin College will confer honorary degrees upon four distinguished persons in the fields of music, history, and journalism during its 170th Commencement Monday, May 26, on Tappan Square.

Champion Named Head Women's Basketball Coach--Drops Interim Title (May 1, 2003)
MAY 1, 2003---Clayton Koppes, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has announced that Christa Champion has been appointed head women's basketball coach at Oberlin College. Champion served as interim head coach this past season and led the Yeowomen to a 6-19 overall record.

APRIL 22, 2003---Four Oberlin College students have been named 2003-2004 Goldwater Scholars, the premier undergraduate award of its type in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.

Second Annual Town/Gown Big Parade Takes Over Oberlin May 3. (April 22, 2003)
APRIL 22, 2003---A giant kangaroo, a man-eating dragon and other equally huge creatures, plus bands, jugglers, giant puppets, stilt walkers and all manner of floats will wind through Oberlin’s downtown Saturday, May 3, as part of the city’s second annual town/gown Big Parade and Festival.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Anthony Lewis is Oberlin College's Commencement Speaker. (April 18, 2003)
APRIL 18, 2003--Anthony Lewis--a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner for national reporting and a distinguished civil rights activist--will present Oberlin College’s 2003 Commencement address Monday, May 26 on Tappan Square. More than 700 students are expected to receive degrees at the ceremony, which marks the 170th Commencement at the College--the first in the U.S. to admit students regardless of race or gender.

Oberlin Art Professor Wins Coveted Award. (April 18, 2003)
APRIL 18, 2003--The ongoing debate surrounding how Americans memorialize our combat dead is the focus of an essay that has just earned Oberlin faculty member Andrew M. Shanken one of the most coveted awards in the field of art history: the 2003 Arthur Kingsley Porter Prize.

Recent Oberlin Conservatory of Music Graduate Wins Metropolitan Opera National Counci Auditions. (April 11, 2003)
APRIL 11, 2003--Soprano Alyson Cambridge, a 2002 graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, has won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions for 2003, held Sunday, April 6, during a Grand Finals Concert at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in New York. A native of Arlington, Virginia, Cambridge, 23, is the youngest singer to win this year. She is also the second Oberlin alumna in a row to win.

New Media Designer Curtis Hillman to Lecture at Oberlin College April 14. (April 10, 2003)
APRIL 10, 2003--Award-winning new media designer Hillman Curtis will lecture at Oberlin College Monday, April 14, at 4:30 p.m. The free, public lecture will take place in Classroom I of the Allen Art Building.

Oberlin College to Host Congressional Arts Award Ceremony April 21. (April 9, 2003)
APRIL 9, 2003--Oberlin College will host an awards ceremony and reception honoring the winners of the 22nd Annual Congressional Art Competition Monday, April 21, at 5 p.m., in the atrium of the College’s Science Center, 130 West Lorain St.

Noted Scholar of Modern American Religion to Speak at Oberlin College April 10. (April 3, 2003)
APRIL 3, 2003--Martin E. Marty, one of today's leading interpreters of American religion, will speak at Oberlin College Thursday, April 10. Marty's lecture, "Awash in a Sea of Religious Pluralism," will begin at 12:20 p.m. in West Lecture Hall, in the new Science Center (corner of Lorain and Woodland Streets).

Noted Biblical Scholar to Deliver Haskell Lectures at Oberlin College. (March 27, 2003)
MARCH 27, 2003--Robert Alter, one of today’s foremost commentators on the Bible as literature, will deliver Oberlin College's annual Haskell Lectures April 6, 7 and 9. Biblical Style is the title of this year's series, which is free and open to the public.

Oberlin College to Host Black Studies Conference April 10-12. (March 21, 2003)
MARCH 21, 2003--The 2003 Black Studies Conference--"A Celebration of Scholarship: The Souls of Black Folk"--will be held April 10 through 12 at Oberlin College under the auspices of the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA).

Driving While Black is Title of April 3 Talk at Oberlin College. (March 19, 2003)
MARCH 19, 2003--"Driving While Black: Differential Enforcement of The Traffic Laws on the New Jersey Turnpike" is the title of Oberlin College’s first annual Tamura/Lilly Distinguished Lecture, to be presented Thursday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m.

Essence to Present Spring Dance Concert March 14, 15, 16 at Oberlin College. (March 7, 2003)
MARCH 7, 2003--African-American dance and drumming alumni from Oberlin College will join the Essence student dancers in presenting the company’s 2003 spring concert Friday, March 14, and Saturday March15, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, March 16, at 2 p.m. in Warner Center, 30 N. Professor St.

MARCH 3, 2003--Fifty years ago, on March 2, 1953, Jazz at Oberlin, the landmark album by the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet, was recorded live in Finney Chapel.

FEBRUARY 28, 2003--In celebration of International Women’s Day, Oberlin College’s Gender and Women’s Studies Program will present a lecture by noted feminist scholar Paola Bacchetta Thursday, March 6. at 4:30 p.m. in the Oberlin Science Center's Craig Lecture Hall.

Works by Artists from Five Schools on View at Cleveland Gallery March 21. (February 26, 2003)
FEBRUARY 26, 2003--We Love Evan--a joint exhibition of works by eight students from Oberlin College, the Cleveland Institute of Art, Kent State University, Lorain County Community College, and Wooster College will be on view March 21st though April 8th at the Oberlin College Gallery and Performance Space at Here Here in downtown Cleveland.

Oberlin Hosts Art Workshop, Student Film Screening at Cleveland Gallery March 8. (February 24, 2003)
FEBRUARY 24, 2003--On Saturday, March 8th seniors in art at Oberlin College will host a Free For All Ages art workshop from 1 to 5 p.m. and a Student Film Night at 8 p.m. at the College’s Gallery & Performance Space at Here Here, 1305 Euclid Avenue.

FEBRUARY 14, 2003--Clevelanders will get the opportunity to see outstanding Oberlin College student art, theater, video, music, and dance February 21 through March 8, when 25 seniors present a collaborative show in the heart of the theater district.

Conservatory to Host Midwest Composers Symposium. (February 14, 2003)
FEBRUARY 14, 2003--The Oberlin Conservatory of Music will be the scene of the next new thing when it hosts the 2002-03 Midwest Composers Symposium Friday and Saturday, February 14 and 15.

Distinguished Scholar Presents the 2003 Charles Beebe Martin Classical Lectures. (February 10, 2003)
FEBRUARY 10, 2003--Distinguished scholar Gregory Nagy will present the 2003 Charles Beebe Martin Classical Lecture series at Oberlin College March 3, 4, 6, and 7. All of the lectures will be free and open to the public.

FEBRUARY 10, 2003--On Sunday, February 16, at 8 p.m. on the campus of Oberlin College, jazz lovers will be in their element--and that element is fire.

Oberlin Korean Student Association to Host Conference February 28-March 2. (February 6, 2003)
FEBRUARY 6, 2003--A Century of Struggle: Shaping Korean Identities is the title of the fourth biennial conference to be presented by the Oberlin Korean Students Association (OKSA) February 28 through March 2. The keynote speaker will be John Lie, the Korean Foundation Professor of Korean Studies and professor of sociology at the University of Michigan.

Indigo Girls to Perform February 15 at Oberlin College. (February 6, 2003)
FEBRUARY 6, 2003--Epic Recording artists Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, the Indigo Girls, will present "A Concert for Peace" Saturday, February 15 at 8 p.m. in Oberlin College’s Finney Chapel. The concert is part of a 15-city tour supporting their eighth studio album, Become You.
