Karl Krolow, who died in 1999, was the last great German poet of his generation. This selection, which includes the brilliant sequences "Time Passing" and "Body," does justice to his remarkable range and quiet authority.

Stuart Friebert has also translated Miroslav Holub, Gunter Eich, Marin Sorescu, Judita Vaiciunaite, and Giovanni Raboni. His own collections of poetry include Funeral Pie and The Darmstadt Orchids.

WHEN THINGS TURN GREEN

Anyone can call into the woods
or let old love letters spoil in the rain
at just the right moment,
dump the second car somewhere, forever--
and take a false name
like an abandoned child.
You'd like to put that down
to spring.
But it happens too fast.
The revolution's begun,
the leaves breathe too hurriedly,
nobody protests the development
of the subconscious,
street numbers disappear overnight.
It's hard to find anyone
who knows his way around in the green.
