ALAN MONTGOMERY (Assistant Music Director of Opera Theater) has been Assistant Music Director of the Oberlin Opera Theater since 1979. An Indiana native, Mr. Montgomery has a doctorate in conducting from Indiana University . He has also worked as an opera coach with the Hamburg State Opera in Germany.

In January 1991, he conducted the performance of Bastien and Bastienne, which launched Oberlin's year-long Mozart Bicentennial Celebration, conducted the production of Signor Deluso in January 1992 and more recently was the Music Director for Street Scene and Assistant Music Director for Porgy and Bess. In the spring of 1997, Mr. Montgomery conducted the Oberlin Opera Theater production of Copland's The Tender Land.

Mr. Montgomery has done research on various operas, including Gounod's Faust and has made singing translations of La Périchole, La Traviata, and Die Fledermaus. From 1978 to 1993 he was the Artistic Director of Nettle Creek Players in Indiana, where he conducted over fifty musicals. Mr. Montgomery's first musical, Robin Hood!, made its debut there in 1985 and was revived in 1991. His second musical, A Dog's Life, was premiered there in 1989. For four summers he has served as vocal coach with the Young Artists Vocal Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
