DESCRIPTION
- The gyroscope can be used to show
precession and nutation, qualitatively, or quantitatively with the
rotary motion sensors. One sensor can be used to monitor
precession rate, the other can monitor the nutation angle.
Place the slotted
mass on one end of the shaft. Spin the gyroscope
using string wrapped around the pulley. Release it and allow it
to precess. To show
nutation, release the gyroscope at about a 30 degree angle to the
horizontal or give it an initial velocity with or against the
precession direction.
NOTES
Level the base as
described in the manual.
Balance the gyroscope by adjusting the positions of the counterweights.
