NCAC Roundup
Allegheny, Denison picked in pre-race poll In a pre-championship poll conducted by the NCAC cross country coaches last week, Allegheny and Denison were predicted to finish first in the men’s and women’s races, respectively. The Gators, the defending champions for both the men and women, were picked to defend their men’s title, receiving eight of 10 first-place nods. Denison, ranked 23rd in the nation, got six of nine votes for the women. The championship races, held at Wooster’s L.C. Boles Golf Course, will begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Gators shock Battling Bishops Allegheny’s women’s soccer team did what no other team has done in over three years last weekend as the Gators defeated Ohio Wesleyan 3-1 at home. The loss snapped the two-time defending national champion Bishops’ 60-game win streak, an NCAA Division III record. Ohio Wesleyan’s NCAC win streak of 29, a conference record, was also broken. Ironically, it was Allegheny who last defeated Ohio Wesleyan when they came away with a 3-2 win Sept. 23, 2000, also at home. The Battling Bishops dropped from the number one spot in the national polls, which they had held all season, to third. Allegheny climbed from 25th to 10th nationally. The NCAC postseason picture is set, with Allegheny, Ohio Wesleyan, Wooster and Denison assured of the top four spots. The seeds will depend on the outcome of this weekend’s games, especially Allegheny’s matchup against Wooster. The Battling Bishops, accustomed to looking down at the rest of the NCAC from the top, will surely be gearing up for a possible rematch with the Gators in the conference tournament. Men’s soccer tourney teams set Denison, Allegheny, Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan have all locked up the men’s soccer NCAC tournament bid as well as the women’s, with the seeding to be determined after this weekend’s games. Currently Denison, ranked seventh in the nation, sits in first place. Tomorrow they face off against second-place Allegheny. At stake is not only the top spot in the conference but also possibly a valuable home semifinal matchup. Wittenberg captures regular season title For the seventh straight time, Wittenberg grabbed the top seed in the NCAC volleyball tournament. The Tigers are ranked fifth in the nation at 21-5. All the conference teams except last place Earlham will participate in the eight-team tournament. Compiled by Laurie Stein |
