The Oberlin baseball team racked up a two and one record for the week and now stands at 12-22 overall. The squad is riding its third two-game winning streak for the season as it goes into Wednesday’s clash in Berea against Baldwin-Wallace (18-12 overall).

The Yeomen defeated Kenyon by a score of 11-2 and then traveled to Lake Erie College, winning by a score of 22-0. The team will seek its second three-game winning streak of the season with a win over the Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets.

“The team has really put it together over the last two weeks,” head coach Eric Lahetta said. “We are getting great pitching, timely hitting and doing the job defensively.”

Oberlin dropped the first game of their double header at Dill field on Thursday to NCAC rivals Kenyon in a 14-7 slugfest.

Junior backstop Andrew Caprariello belted a three-run shot in the fourth inning that scored sophomore second baseman Nick Broughton and first-year third baseman Jesse-Cullen Dupont. That cut the deficit to 9-3.

Oberlin would score four more runs in the game, on RBIs by replacement second baseman Noah Streib, who knocked in two, first baseman Kyle Neumeier and designated hitter B.J. Belville.

However, the offense could not overcome the nine runs that the Lords put up in the first three innings. Sophomore Steve Solomon started and took the loss for Oberlin, going two innings while allowing nine runs, only five of which were earned, on five hits and striking out one. He is now 2 -2 on the year.

A Lorain County native, senior Mike Hamilton picked up the win and went all seven innings for Kenyon, allowing seven runs on ten hits.

“I am really surprised on how well our team has bounced back from some tough late inning losses,” Lahetta said. “We’ve lost like 10 games by two runs or less. That can be very tough on a young team, but we have some great senior leaders.”

The Yeomen wasted no time putting the first game of the day behind them. First-year New York native Jaremy Rich navigated the Lords’ lineup with prowess and earned the complete-game victory, scattering seven hits while only walking one and fanning three. Rich’s record improves to 3-0 with the win.

Thursday’s second game was also an offensive outburst for the Yeomen. First-year centerfielder Chad Kutting led the way with four RBI, and going 3 for 4 including a bases-clearing double in the second inning.

Senior co-captain Troy Dewitt also got in on the act, going two for two while driving in three runs.

Lords’ pitchers senior Chris Lynn and first-year Dan Shelley both were shelled by the Oberlin bats. They combined to allow 8 runs on 11 hits over the first four innings.

The Kenyon win was Oberlin’s last NCAC game for the 2004 season. They finish with a 1-13 record in the conference, fifth in the Eastern Division.

A day after the doubleheader, Lahetta took his squad to Painesville to play the Lake Erie College Storm in a rain-shortened five-inning romp that made the Kenyon win look like a nailbiter.

Oberlin put up an 18 spot in a monster first inning that started with Storm first-year Jon Gibson loading the bases for Yeomen cleanup hitter DeWitt. DeWitt promptly smashed a double that scored two and Oberlin’s hitters were off and running.

“I’ve never seen a team score 18 runs in an inning and send 21 batters to the plate,” Lahetta said. “You feel for the other team because we’ve been on the other side before.”

DeWitt and Broughton led the team with four RBIs on the day, while Neumeier and Kutting each had three. Neumeier and Broughton were responsible for the two Oberlin dings. Both came in the onslaught that was the top of the first inning.

Neumeier’s shot scored three while Broughton brought them all in with a grand slam. Senior Peter Wyatt notched his third win, allowing only one hit and striking out six with four choice innings. First-year Olin Bekis pitched a perfect fifth before the rain put Lake Erie out of its misery.
