Do we really have to go through this again? Didn't the College learn the first time, when it failed to keep Kristine Burns at Oberlin by not creating a tenure track position? Why are we now losing Wendy Hesford, a valued expository writing instructor, for almost the same exact reason?
According to the coursebook, "Writing is one of the primary skills needed at Oberlin. Writing serves as one of the most essential tools for inquiry in a liberal education... [and] no student should omit writing well from among the goals that he or she pursues..." What? The College is going to tell students they should make writing their top priority, but only if they don't expect the College to help them out in that regard?
Expository writing is a necessary skill, both for writing assignments during a student's four years at Oberlin, and then in almost any field a student would later pursue. Oberlin should be doing everything possible to encourage the development of good writing skills. Failing to retain a favorite expository writing professor isn't exactly a move in that direction.
