SFP and Jewish students sponsor awareness weeks
Students participated in Palestine Awareness Week and celebrated Israeli Independence and Memorial Day. Students for a Free Palestine and members of Oberlin's Jewish community attempted to educate the campus about their ideas this week through events including a number of films, speakers and tabling in Wilder Bowl.
Protest forces Neuroscience lab to be rescheduled
Animal Rights activists were successful Thursday in halting neuroscience lab students from performing surgery on rats during a peaceful protest. Professor Smith and members of his class decided not to proceed with the day's scheduled experiment and scheduled the lab for a later date and time.
George Walker OC'41 wins Pulitzer for composition
Winner of the 1996 Pulitzer Prize in music and alumni George Walker discusses his award and responses he has received since he was presented with the award. Walker's winning composition "Lilacs" is a 16 minute work for soprano and orchestra based on the Walt Whitman poem "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed."
One student expelled, another suspended for disturbing peace
In response to an appeal to overturn Dean of Student Life and Services Charlene Cole-Newkirk's decision to punish two students, the Community Board will inform the students of its decision today. The two juniors were accused of public drunkenness and disturbing the peace on campus Thursday morning.
Assistant dean hired
Shilpa Davé will serve as Assistant Dean of Student Life and Services on campus beginning next fall. She accepted the search committee's offer early this week and will be involved in directing the operations of the Multicultural Resource Center.
Dealers feel little fear for Security or the police
Drug dealers on campus discuss their reasons for selling drugs and the risks and benefits of their activity. Drug use and selling in town receives different attention from the Oberlin Police than it does on campus.
Students concerned about greater enforcement
Residential Coordinators discuss whether or not they believe the enforcement of drugs is steadily becoming more strict. Cole-Newkirk met with RCs last week to address concerns of drug policy enforcement expected of RCs by Residential Life.
