Admissions numbers positive

and exceeded its target goal of 615. Six hundred and forty-seven students have committed to enrolling in the fall.

Though all the first-year spots have been filled, the entering class is slightly short on transfers, which Director of Admissions Debra Chermonte said is fairly typical at this time of year. The transfer goal is not usually met until June, Chermonte said.

The admit rate was lower than projected while the yield, or percentage of accepted students who choose to attend Oberlin, was higher than originally projected.

The College admitted 64 percent of its applicant pool, which topped 4,000 for the second time in six years and rose by 3.4 percent. The College expected to admit 67 percent of all applicants. Last year, the admit rate hit 72 percent.

The yield is 27 percent, a percentage point higher than projected. The yield is always fluctuating, Chermonte said. She said, "It's a moment to moment thing."

Chermonte said a couple students have been taken off the waitlist to ensure that the size of the class doesn't shrink during the summer, when some students traditionally change their minds or defer their acceptance for a year.

The SAT scores for the entering class are slightly higher than they were for the current first-year students, even when set on the same scale. The incoming class is the first admitted with a newly recentered SAT system. The average verbal score of the incoming class is 674 and the average math score is 640.

Converted to the old scale, those scores are 640 and 614, five and nine points higher than the scores for the current first-year class.
