Goldberg appointed as Dean

by Susanna Henighan

President Nancy Dye announced on May 14 that she will recommend Dr. Samuel Goldberg, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Oberlin, to serve as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for the 1996-1997 school year. She will make her recommendation to the board of trustees at its June meeting.

Goldberg said, "I regard it as an honor to be asked. I was glad to help."

Currently James Helm, professor of classics, is acting as dean after the resignation of Mary Ella Feinlieb in March.

Goldberg, who retired from Oberlin in 1985, served as chair of the mathematics department and on the College Faculty Council. He was a program officer for the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation after retiring, where he served as a consultant on Sloan's New Liberal Arts Program among other things.

The College has hired Christine Young, a senior principal from Academic Search Consultant Services, to be a "headhunter" for the dean search. Consultant Services is a non-profit academic search service. Young and another member of the service helped conduct the search for Dye two years ago.

"I am extremely pleased that she will be on the case," Marcia Colish, chair of the dean search committee, said of Young. She cited Young's experience with the college as a benefit.

Young visited campus this week, and spent time meeting with faculty and administrative groups. Colish said that she spent a long time bringing Young up to date about staff and other changes that would affect the deanship.

Colish said that Young has already begun evaluating a preliminary job description and a schedule for the search.

Colish said that the committee hopes to receive applications this summer and have a "manageable group of candidates in September." Dye said that she hopes to have a replacement named by early 1997.

The search will be national and internal in scope. Although the search is national, Dye said she hopes current faculty members will apply. "I feel we have strong possibilities [within the college] of people who would make a strong dean."

In the interim, Goldberg will be aided by two associate deans, David Love, OC'70, and Bruce Richards, OC'67 and physics professor. Love has been acting associate dean this year. Carol Lasser, who was associate dean this year will be returning to the faculty as a history professor.

According to Dye, she and the search committee independently thought that Goldberg would be an appropriate choice for acting dean. Dye said, "I expect him to do an excellent job."

Dye called Goldberg a "prime mover" in the New Liberal Arts Program.

Goldberg is looking forward to "getting to know an aspect of the college I never knew about." He said, "I believe the job is a difficult job; there are a lot of things to do."
