Search ends after seven months
Dennis Rupert has been hired as the new assistant director of Residential Life after a seven-month search process. He will be in charge of facility management and will start Monday in preparation for Commencement and next year. Part of his job entails cleaning up and maintaining the dorms.
New program director for Asia House
Asia House is looking to create a new program director position for next semester. The position, which will be a one-year, part time position, is designed to strengthen Asia House�s role as a program house and a place for information on the Asian-American community at and beyond Oberlin.
Study shows Oberlin's difficulty in retaining black students
African-American retention rates have dropped recently, and the President�s office commissioned a study to find out why. The study was done through phone interviews with alumni and looks into what keeps students at Oberlin and what doesn�t.
Workshops provide opportunity to teach, spread campus activism
A Women�s Health Conference is slated to begin this weekend. The conference includes talks by representatives of organizations such as the New York Lesbian AIDS Project, the Jane Collective and the National Women�s Network. There will be workshops on feminist therapy, abortion clinic work and women�s health.
OSSU works to improve aid packages
Members of the Oberlin Socialist Student Union met Tuesday to discuss financial aid and need-blind admissions in the College. They voiced concern over the diversity of the campus, and the definition of the word itself.
Weekend funded by $20,000 gift from Nord Foundation
A sustainable environment symposium will be held in Oberlin this weekend. The conference will pertain to the College and city as well as other environments. The idea was initiated by the development of the upcoming Environmental Studies Center and was funded by the Nord Family Foundation.
Two charters tabled for next meeting
The Student Life Committee approved charters for eight organizations last Wednesday. The S&M/B&D group and Twelve Inches of Velvet, an organization working to raise profits for AIDS charities, are still under consideration.
Pastor to speak on homosexuality and Christianity
Two lectures this weekend on homosexuality in Christianity will be given by the Reverend George Williamson at the First Baptist Church of Oberlin. The lectures, based on Williamson�s upcoming book, will focus on historical and contemporary views of homosexuality as evil.
