Two women to share their folk-pop sound at Co-op

Chris Williamson and Tret Fure will sing at the Bookstore

by Lauren Viera

Obies will have the chance to get Between the Covers this Sunday at the Co-Op bookstore. Musical partners Chris Williamson and Tret Fure bring their folk-pop sound to Oberlin via their latest album and a few hours of quality acoustics.

The two women, who share more than a musical relationship, collaborated on the latest album, the debut release for the pair's new record label, Wolf Moon Records. Distributed through Goldenrod Distribution, Inc., the album is a dual effort hopefully able to reach a wider audience through the merger.

Both women have been highly regarded in their musianships by everyone from Bonnie Raitt to DetourÊmagazine to The Washington Post. With roots in the early '70s, Fure broke into the industry as early as 19, helping to open the doors for future generations of women artists.

Opening for acts like Yes and recording with Spencer Davis were just a few of Fure's accomplishments in her young career. She went on to become one of the nation's first woman sound engineers, a path which eventually introduced her to Williamson. Their first collaborative work was a children's album, released in 1981.

Williamson, too, has literally devoted her life to the uprising of women's music. Since her 1975 debut, The Changer and the Changed, Williamson co-founded Olivia Records as an alternative to dead-end opportunities for releasing women artists' works independently. Politically and musically, Williamson slowly built her reputation as one of the prominent leaders in feminist and lesbian authority in the media.

20 albums later, Williamson is still at it. Covers is the second collaboration between she and Fure, who have been partners for over 15 years. While Williamson is the veteran tour musician, the pair make their way to Oberlin after a long road of successful and educational exposure to the international public. And, come Sunday, Obies can share in the experience.

Chris Williamson and Tret Fure will hold an autograph signing at the Co-Op Bookstore Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. and will perform at 7 p.m. joined by opening act June Millington. Tickets for the performance are $16 advance, $18 at the door.
