Carr Pool hosted a water polo tournament this past weekend. Bowling Green State University, Notre Dame University of Ohio, Kalamazoo College, Akron University, and Kent State University all showed up at our humble swimmin' hole to get a piece of our action.
The Oberlin Wharfrats kept their first game competitive with a 6-1 lead off the mark only to be crushed by the sheer size of the opponents.
Next Oberlin cruised to a 20-3 victory over the undermanned Kent State, allowing the fledgeling rookie team to get in the water.
Saturday's biggest game, in terms of body weight, was played by the 20 man Notre Dame squad. The first quarter was full of all around floudering by both sides. In the third quarter Obie defense kicked in, headed by junior Jeremy Steinhauer and sophomore Jesse Carew, capping a Notre Dame spurt in the high teens. Senior Wayne Miller and Mitch scored a couple in the fourth quarter to yield a final score of 20-4, Notre Dame.
The Wharfrats then took on the surly dudes from Kalamazoo, who fared well in the first half but were over come in the fourth losing 19-4.
By Sunday Oberlin was showing grand improvements in all categories. Stern defense and free-wheelin offense proved to be the key catalists to achieving the gel-state for the Wharfrats.
Goalie senior Rob Pinson played an excellent game against Akron with 12 blocks in the second half alone. Senior Scott Remley's rambunctious behavior led him to the penalty box more than once but he returned in the fourth to join in the pummeling that was given.
