Preying Manti terrorize teams at Athens with zone

By Sadie Thorin

Hard at Work playing Frisbee.

Oberlin women's ultimate team, the Preying Manti, dominated at the University of Ohio Halloween Tournament last weekend. In party-town Athens, OH, the Manti beat such teams as Elmer's Pink Cadillac from Pittsburgh 13-1, Flashdance from Columbus 12-11 and the Ohio University Smurfs 10-5.

Against club team Pink Cadillac, the Manti won 13-1 allowing the new team only one point. First-year Allison Duwe and co-captain junior Liza Bean headed a great offense with great continuation plays down the line. The sidelines were never without spirit as Sunshine Liz Rosenberg and Rainbow Felicia lighted up the field.

Sophomore Shawn 'where's your costume?' Margles finally made it to the fields in time for the second game after taking a small detour to Michigan on the Saturday morning drive from Oberlin.

The second game was against the University of Ohio. The Manti came out strong, taking the score to half at 7-2.

The Manti used their new Duck Zone to stifle the Smurfs. The Duck Zone comes from Strawberry who learned it this summer in Eugene, OR home of the University of Oregon Disco Ducks ultimate team.

After a shocking few points off the new Duck Zone in which sophomore Abby Muffin, senior co-captain Sadie Strawberry, sophomore Rebecca Eggplant, and Bean, worked the spread, the Smurfs were worn out.

The Smurfs game was important to Oberlin because they are the only competition the Praying Manti will be facing this spring during the collegiate season. Last spring Oberlin reigned over their Ohio-Kentucky Section including the OU Smurfs.

OU took the final point after a belabored time cap where neither team could complete a pass to the end zone. First years Leah Tree and Tori Disco Fairy led the forces of nature defensively.

Oberlin's final game was against blue tights and Flashdance. The Manti, and Bean, had to struggle to keep their hands to themselves when the player with the blue tights was spirit-fouling right and left. With strong defense and mad go-to the Manti kept a lead the entire game before winning with a time- capped final three points.

After the victory, the Manti fled on to the field as though it were Nationals. After such intense games, many returned to Oberlin to enjoy the Scofflaws and the Toasters Saturday night.
