S-chicken clucks and struts

by Benjamin Clark

Oberlin Athletics just landed one of its biggest recruits ever. Only they're not sure if it will be a gorilla, a dragon, or a super chicken.

That is what a group of Oberlin College team captains narrowed the field down to this Tuesday for a new mascot costume. First-year Daniel Schwartz presented pictures of nine different mascot costumes to several team captains, who then voted on their favorites. Super Chicken

In attendance were first-year Ryan Catignani and sophomore Chris Davis from the football team, senior Beth Lowe and junior Clara Stemwedel from women's swimming, sophomore Monica Bush from women's basketball, junior Katie Ruth from women's volleyball and junior Peter Swendsen from men's tennis.

Ruth supported the gorilla and said, "I'm not down with the chicken idea."

The costumes that will not have the glory of representing Oberlin included a big eagle, a pink gorilla, an owl, a realistic lobster, a zebra and an alien.

Schwartz, the organizer for the mascot costume, will meet with Associate Dean of Students Bill Stackman to decide how to present the costumes to the student body for a vote.

"We are just trying to get a little more school spirit, get people to come to varsity games," said Schwartz.

The teams will retain their Yeomen/Yeowomen names, and the macot will become the "Yeomen Super Chicken" or "Yeowomen Dragon", depending upon the event.

"Corny but cute. They are just things that will get the fans riled up," said Ruth.
