Trustees meet this weekend

by Margo Lipschultz

The Board of Trustees will meet on campus this weekend to discuss many upcoming renovations to the College.

With plans for the new science center to flesh out and housing and dining renovation budgets to approve, the Trustees will have a busy weekend meeting in committees and as a whole board.

Dean of the College Clayton Koppes said the Trustees also plan to discuss the role of athletics at Oberlin.

"The discussion is motivated by a sense that it's time to take a serious look at the overall Athletics program at Oberlin and see how it can be strengthened, and see what it would mean for students and the institution as a whole," Koppes said. He said the timing is appropriate since a search for a new athletic director is currently being conducted.

"We're kind of pushing long range planning with Athletics. We're going a little further in how we define Athletics," College President Nancy Dye said.

Also included in the agenda is a report from the accreditation team which came to assess Oberlin early this week. The team visits the campus once every 10 years to assess various aspects of the community, including academics and student governance.

Chairman of the Educational Programs and Policies Committee (EPPC) David Orr, professor of Environmental Studies, will give the accreditation team's current report to the Trustees.

Also on the agenda is a report by Oberlin's Investment Committee on current stock performance results.

In addition, Koppes said the Trustees will evaluate several tenure track candidates. "We have four very strong tenure cases going to the Board," he said.

The Trustees' open session will be held Saturday at 10:15 a.m. Observers must have a ticket from the Office of the Secretary to attend the meeting.
