Student assaulted in town

by Russell Menyhart

An Oberlin student was robbed at gunpoint over Spring Break.

According to the department of Safety and Security, the male student was walking south on Main Street towards Missler's Supervalu market at about 1 a.m. Saturday. The student said that as he neared Groveland Street a young man appeared from behind a dumpster and approached him brandishing a gun.

According to the student, the assailant placed the weapon against his chest and said, "Give me your money or I'll kill you." He said the assailant appeared to be very scared and after taking the student's money, he ran west. The student began pursuing the man but decided to turn around.

The student said he had not felt threatened by the assailant and thus waited over one hour before reporting the robbery to the police.

According to the student, a police officer told him that he was "too calm." The officer told the student he may need to take a lie detector test about the incident. The student has not yet taken the test.

The Police Department describes the assailant as a medium-build male, approximately 5'8" tall, who wore a blue nylon hooded jacket and a beige stocking-type material to conceal his face.

According to a release issued by Department of Safety and Security, the department considers this to be an extremely serious situation. Department officials suggest that students not walk alone after dark and that they remain aware of the location of the nearest open building or emergency Blue Light telephone at all times.
