Women's tennis team rallies

Brockelman, Totty lead team

by Zofin Taher

The women's tennis team bounced back from last week's laundry list of losses with a win against Wittenberg University last Saturday 6-3, but they lost on Tuesday to Denison University 9-0.

"Some of the team actually played better against Denison. What we were having trouble with was serving," said Coach Don Hunsinger. "Apart from that we played very well, they were just more talented than we were."

Wittenberg was a good match for the team. Junior Leigh Ann Totty won her singles match 6-3, 6-1.

Sophomore Jill Brockelman won her match 6-1, 6-1, and she said although her opponent looked very good during warm-ups she got frustrated with her own playing, making it an easier win for Brockelman.

First-year Beth Krupski won her match 7-6 with a tie breaker of 7-1, 6-3. Player of the match was senior Kate Petersen who won 6-4, 6-4, in a game that Hunsinger said was the best match she has had in the last four years.

"She really played within herself," Hunsinger said.

Petersen said, "I think I played very well at the beginning and end of the match. I don't agree with the coach. I did play well in parts, other parts I played horribly. For example I had trouble closing the first set."

Junior Tara Sievers and fifth-year Kathy Hertzer both lost their singles matches; however, the coach firmly believed that Oberlin was the better team and that the score could have easily been 8-1, with all singles matches belonging to the Yeowomen.

"I believe that if Tara played Gwen Smith 10 times she'd beat her nine, and Kathy just couldn't get started," said Hunsinger.

In doubles Oberlin won their first two games 8-2, 8-6, but lost the final one 8-1. "Doubles were good, Totty and Sievers entirely controlled the first match, it wasn't as close as the 8-1 loss was," said Hunsinger.

At Denison the player of the match was Totty. "She played very well singles and doubles, lost a tough three set match but her effort was just superior," said Hunsinger.

"I think that Denison had improved from last year with more

depth than they had before. However the game score doesn't reflect how competitive the match actually was. Each individual match was competitive but they edged us out each time," said Petersen.

"The team was very supportive of each other which is one of our strengths. Unfortunately, consistency isn't one of our strengths and that's something we keep working on," said Hertzer.

The team's record currently stands at 5-10-1.

This team plays at Case Western Reserve University Saturday and at home against Ohio Wesleyan University on Sunday.
