Arts...Out of Town


The semester will be coming to a close before you know it. Better get out and enjoy yourself before the dark cloud that is finals comes passing overhead.

The Akron Art Museum continues its annual poetry series, "Poetry '98: Underground/Overhead" with Asian poetry and music, which includes performances by flutist Jane Berkner and readings of Asian poetry by local poets. British Organist Jane Parker-Smith plays the works of Bach, Franck, Sandvold, Tournemire and Britton this Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Gartner Auditorium of The Cleveland Museum of Art. She is internationally heralded as a virtuoso and a technical master.

At the Cleveland Public Theater, you can catch the tail end of One Edward Two, based on the play Edward the Second by Christopher Marlowe. Based on the premise that Edward was gay, the show focuses on the love triangle among the king, his consort Queen Isabella, and lifelong friend Piers Gaveston. Catch the New York Film Critics' favorite documentary of 1997, Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, at the Cleveland Cinematheque tomorrow at 9:45 p.m. It is a moving portrait of four obsessives: a lion tamer, a topiary gardener, a mole-rat expert, and a robotics engineer. Experience Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" with the Canton Symphony Orchestra tonight at 8 p.m. in the Cable Recital hall at the Cultural Center for the Arts. Tickets are $11 for adults and $9 for students and seniors. Call (330) 452-2094 for reservations.

Go get your swing on with the Akron Symphony Orchestra as they present "A Salute to the Big Bands," tomorrow night at 8 p.m. This big band extravaganza will feature favorites by Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. The Cleveland Play House presents Sylvia, a play about man, woman and dog! It is an off-Broadway hit comedy by A.R. Gurney. It follows the marital mishaps of Greg and Kate, empty-nesters who've recently moved to Manhattan. The dog, Sylvia, is actaully played by a beautiful young woman. Imagine that. It opens tonight at the Drury Theater. Call (216)795-7000 for tickets.

The Jewish Community Center presents its sixth annual Fine Craft Festival this weekend at Eton Collection in Woodmere. This year's show is especially symbolic because of the 50th anniversaries of Israel and The Jewish Community Center in Cleveland. Seventy artists were chosen out of a pool of 400 for this exhibit. The show is free on Sunday and Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (216) 831-0700 for information.

In the spirit of Mardi Gras and Carnival, the Cleveland Museum of Art celebrates its Fourth Annual Circle of Masks this Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. This free family event will feature Latin American mask-making and companion dance performances as the museum honors its international artists exchange with Mexico, Trinidad and Puerto Rico. The Ohio Ballet joins Apollo's Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra for a music and dance spectacular at The Ohio Theater, Playhouse Square. It will include works by J.C. Bach, J.S. Bach and Handel. The show is tonight and tomorrow night at 8 p.m. as well as tomorrow at 2 p.m. tickets range from $15 to $32. Call (216) 670-9278 for reservations.
