Water polo keeps head above water

by Jesse Carew

Polo Ralph Lauren may not be the most abundant of brands in Ohio, but then, Oberlin polo isn't either. Last week at the University of Ohio pool, the Oberlin Water Pollo Club met with such behemoths as Ohio University, Baldwin-Wallace College and Ohio State University and Dublin Agua Club, a team composed mostly of members of the Ohio State team.

Amazingly Oberlin had no problems playing with the excitable U of O squad on Saturday afternoon.

The Obies, who were up by three at one point in the first half, showed real improvement, especially in defensive play.

Coach junior Scott Remley had nothing but good things to say about the defense.

While the defense kept the games close it was the offense that provided some pivotal moments for the team.

In the game against Ohio University in the second quarter Oberlin was down 7-0 when Carew's half point side arm skipped at quarter tank and barred down for two points. Then Senior Wayne Miller, chased by three OU defenders, drilled a pop-shot to the high corner from inside the two-meter line. While the team never seriously threatened to overtake Ohio University, the good play of the team left the team in good spirits as it hit High Street and watched keg stands at the polo party.

In the game against Baldwin-Wallace, sophomore Amy Marquardt took no flak as she stook it in the cage, cementing the victory against the Baldwin Wallace squad. Junior Jeremy Steinhauer took over after Marquardt and was a veritable wall of knees and elbows allowing no one to score.

In what could be his last water polo performance, Miller led the team with a sound overall performance racking up 11 goals, five assists and three steals. He added stern advice saying, after the fourth game on Friday, "Yo, let's get the hell out of here."
