FAVA show set for Saturday

by Susanna Henighan

As if the College doesn't offer students enough arts stimulation, the town of Oberlin keeps them pretty busy as well. Crafts fair

This weekend is no exception. The Firelands Association for the Visual Arts (FAVA) is sponsoring its annual contemporary crafts show on Saturday at the New Union Center for the Arts in downtown Oberlin.

The show, in its fourth year, will include demonstrations from a wide variety of artisans and craftspeople in areas ranging from pottery and wooden sculpture, to glass fusing and batik.

Artists will have booths with demonstrations and finished pieces for sale. Betsy Mandaren, executive director of FAVA, said the show is known for the potential for casual interaction with artists. "Adults and children alike are encouraged to talk with the artists and learn about their work and their lives," she said.

Mandaren also encourages people to buy art directly from artists: "There is a special meaning to objects you purchase directly from the individual artist," she said.

One artist who will be sharing his work is J.T. Dunphy from Westerville, Ohio. He uses rescued hardwood to create sculptures, plates, boxes and other creations.

Another is Sally Jaffee of Cleveland Heights, a potter who has successfully carved out a business with her plates, bowls and other works.

Other artists are experienced with silversmithing, etching, polymer clay and glass blowing.

The craft show, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. will be held in the New Union Center for the Arts.
