Student Senate candidates make statements

Joseph Andriano

Endorsements: Fairchild Dorm, Oberlin College Office of Safety and Security

The Senate is in a position to make a large difference in our community. To do so, we need strong Senators who understand the importance of their position. I recognize this charge, and am excited by the prospect of assisting to bring about change for the students of Oberlin.

An important step in representation is to be easily accessible. My policy shall be to read all letters sent to me by the students of Oberlin as to best understand our diverse community. As an example of my excitement to represent the student body, I have already taken the liberty to speak with the Director of Security in regards to creating a panel that could help improve the relationship between Security and the student body through open communication.

If you have any questions of me, or would like me to elucidate any point, please contact me at Joseph.Andriano@oberlin.edu. Thank you.

Christopher Anton

Endorsement: LGBTU

I want to end apathy; save a tree; teach something to an underprivileged child; feed someone that would otherwise go hungry; learn from someone different from me; make someone smile, at least a little; help fix something that's broken; solve a problem before it's a problem; be a friend; listen to those with a message; HEAR what they're saying; crush someone's stereotype; stand firm; be flexible; learn from the past; anticipate the future; make a difference; and always go above and beyond someone's expectations; If you REALLY wanna learn everything there is to know about me, as a person and a candidate, I invite you to spend FIVE MINUTES at the web page I've created for the occasion. I've dubbed my campaign "Five Minutes to End Apathy." I hope you'll take just that. You can end apathy, save a tree, and STILL have plenty of time for frisbee on the bowl.

Atif Aziz

Since attending a couple senate meetings early last semester I found that senate, or the senators, lacked one important characteristic - common sense. The senators are too busy trying to convince themselves that they are an important part of this school that they rarely get anything of major substance done. Often times they espouse the fact that they are unbiased, and don't like to take sides on an issue. I on the other hand am not afraid to say that one opinion is wrong sometimes, and one opinion is right. One goal I would be interested in helping achieve would be the establishment of an Asian American studies department. I know that senate alone is not responsible for determining curriculum but I think having senators that support this would help. Some of the groups with whom I've been involved are: Asian American Studies committee, South Asian Students Association, Third World House, and Third World Co-op among others.

Jesse Bloom

I am Jesse Bloom a first-year student living in Third World House. I am a candidate for Student Senate with a background in Student governance and activism. I served as the Student Goverment President of my high school and was involved in the curriculum development of a Leadership class in its inaugural year.

More importantly, I offer the practical skills developed while I spent the last year working as an Americorps volunteer in a Philadelphia public school. I bring to Senate an idealism tempered by a year of working in an mismanaged elementary school in one of the city's most impoverished neighborhoods.

While working at William Dick Elementary I was a tutor to students in math and reading and coordinated afterschool programs including a Student Government.

After an often exasperating year spent trying to "get things done," it is invigorating to be in an environment where young people feel they have the ability to impact change. I believe Student Senate provides an excellent opportunity for me to grow as a leader and a person. I believe that my unique perspective combined with a knowledge of student governance and the practical experience of a year spent in the workforce makes me an ideal candidate for Student Senate.

Nicholas DeMaison

Endorsement: Music Educator's Association of Ohio, Oberlin Chapter

I am a sophmore Conservatory student, majoring in Music Education, and endorsed by the Music Educator's Association of Ohio. As a Conservatory Student, my primary concern is Con-College relaions, and as a Music Education student, College-community relations.

I will serve as a voice for concerns within the Conservatory and address Con-specific issues. Oberlin College is a school with a financially advantaged population. Unfortunately, Lorain County is not as economically sound, and as a working-class student on financial aid, I believe it is vital for the college to reach out of its elitist bubble of apathy and work alongside the community of which it is apart in order to create an atmosphere of mutual betterment.

Having worked in local schools, I have seen the state of area pulic education, and know that if Oberlin's diverse and talented student body contributes to its improvement, it will reap the rewards of a friendier, safer community in which to live.

Finally, student parking is another area I wish to address, as it is a major concern throughout the student body.

Erica Dicker

Hi. My name is Erica Dicker and I am a sophomore violin performance major. As a conservatory student, I recognize the importance of an environment capable of fostering each of us in our personal growth. I am a stalwart supporter of need-blind admissions, seeing them as necessary to ensure economic diversity vital to the college and conservatory. I am also an involved Co-oper who desires to maintain the security of the Oberlin Student Cooperative Association and its essential role in the Oberlin College community. Acknowledging the specific needs of the individuals comprising our student body, I feel that establishing twenty-four hour practice facilities in the conservatory building would be greatly beneficial to all. Yee haw. Vote for me.

Liane Lau

I'm Liane Lau, a first year from New York City, who is running for Student Senate. I am a dedicated individual who is very involved with the community. I have been on many different organizations that have given me the experience I need to participate with the Student Senate. I have been a CPR & First Aid Instructor, a Coordinator for Disaster Services at the American Red Cross, a writer for a school newspaper, editor of a school yearbook, a member of the Women's Issues Club, Varsity Volleyball and Varsity Soccer Team.

Tired of eating at Dascomb on weekends? Do you want Stevenson open?

Upset about your bike in the rain? Do you want it inside?

I have many ideas, and much motivation.

If you want change, and you want to make a difference - VOTE FOR LIANE LAU

Adrian Leung

PLEASE vote for me.

Please vote for ME.

Please VOTE for me.

Please vote FOR me.

Vote, please, for me.

Jason Porterfield

As the ballot clearly states, my name is Jason Porterfield and I'm running for Student Senate. I am a sophomore college student and have taken in much during my time here. Since almost my first day as a student at Oberlin I have been listening to people complain about issues, both relevant and petty. Oh, have I heard people complain! The thing is, that's all they do and when someone does organize a protest they're only mocked by cynical students who hate to be inconvenienced by someone wishing to make a statement. Such complacency is sickening, and I'm tired of being part of such a scene. I want to be one of the people making your life miserable by taking action. I want to be part of the Senate.

Radhames Miguel Villafana

Greetings!!

My name is Radhames Miguel Villafana, but please call me Miguel.

I am the commmon student member of the Oberlin College Class of 2002, (from the Great State of Texas), with just as many daily struggles as the next guy/gal.

I don't have any fancy beliefs/ideologies. But I believe in common sense-the believe that the common student should be represented in a fair and dignified manner. I believe that Homer's universal statement, "D'oh!!" should be a smaller part of our daily lives.

I have leadership experience from volunteering at my home church, hospital, two libraries, work in a real estate company, and in a federal financial office.

If I am elected, I promise nothing more or less than Oberlin College students getting the best out of their education (and wallets). I promise to keep the ideal of the Oberlin student body pioneering new paths alive and well.

I'm Miguel Villafana. Vote for me.

Have a Nice Day.
