Women's soccer still winless

by Austin Johnson

There was somthing a little off at the women's soccer game this week. Katherine Roberts, OC '98 was on the sidelines - for the wrong team. Roberts, who starred as a Yeowoman for the last four years saw former teammates as an assistant coach for the opposition.

Other things were clearly off for the Yeowomen as well, since the game turned into a disappointing loss for the team.

Oberlin players started slow, allowing the first half of regulation play to be dominated by Capital. Capital took a lot of shots on goal, making the Oberlin defense work hard. Senior Rachel Maguire led the defense and managed to keep Capital at bay. As the first half played on, the Oberlin team found their footing and picked up their play. By the end of the first half, the score was a defensive battle at 0-0.

In the second half, the Yeowomen truly began to play as a team. "The first half they may have started out dominating, but we dominated the entire second half," forward junior Maia Skutel said. Oberlin players started to play with determination and flair, creating some great opportunities for themselves. The Capital goalkeeper was pressured enough at one point to foul inside the box. The Yeowomen failed to produce on the ensuing penalty kick, however. Despite the high-level of play in the second half by Oberlin, Capital was still able to break through the team's defenses and score two goals.

"I think Capital was lucky to have the two goals in second half as they were from messy plays and it certainly does not reflect how our team played," said team trainer Andrew Kim.

The Capital team might not have been more skillful, but they were unmistakably the more physical team.

This did not help Oberlin, especially when few of the key players on the field were fighting off old injuries and were at their highest fitness level for the game.
