WRC to hold 'Women & Sex' discussion

by Jena Karim

Since its opening last spring, the Women's Resource Center (WRC) has quickly taken strides to make an impact on the Oberlin Community. Its objectives include outreach programs which will address the needs of women within the Oberlin College community.

Current plans include a Coffee Night/Discussion "Women and Sex" Oct. 8, planned to coincide with Coming Out Week. Self-defense classes later this semester and a panel on the health of women in color in collaboration with the members of the Third World House are also planned.

The WRC also houses the Women's Health ExCo classes, and groups are welcome to have meetings at the Resource Center.

According to college senior Susan Dennehy, this is an exciting time to be involved with the WRC. "It is young and it is in the process of being shaped and molded," she said.

In order to facilitate the undertaking of so many new projects, the WRC has interns, paid staff and a Governing Board. The interns, college junior Rebecca Swartz and college sophomore Kelly Smith, receive Women's Studies credit to maintain the Resource Library. Swartz and Smith, in collaboration with the Governing Board, establish goals and criteria for acquisitions and organize resources for the community's use.

College junior Marisa Kambour, the recently hired program assistant, is responsible for organizing and running the various programs. The WRC is currently interviewing for the other paid position of Community Liaison. The Liaison will be responsible for including Oberlin communities in programs and assess needs for those communities.

The Governing Board has 11 members, including eight students, staff member Tina Zwegat, Associate Dean of Student Life Bill Stackman and Professor of Women's Studies Anna Agathangelou. The board both oversees and develops programs for the Center.

According to board member and senior Susan Dennehy, "The point is to have an outlet for Oberlin students to express what they would like to see in the WRC and how they would like the WRC to be directly related to them."

There are also plans in the works to establish ties with the Multicultural Resource Center and other similar organizations.
