Field Hockey annihilates

by Jon Gonnelli

The Oberlin field hockey team demolished the University of the South Saturday in a 3-0 win.

Oberlin, being a quick, finesse-oriented team used the turf to their advantage. Scoring was supplied by first-year Vanessa Wirth and co-captain senior Jesse Robinson. After Wirth scored within the first five minutes of play, Robinson provided two insurance goals to seal the win. The Yeowomen tallied eight shots on goal over the course of the game.

Oberlin's defense was solid as well, posting its third shutout of the season. Goalkeeper first-year Pam Walker said, "We played with a lot of desire and kept up the intensity level." She had eight saves on the day.

On Wednesday, Kenyon's luck outweighed Oberlin's superior skill as the Yeowomen suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat in the second half of overtime.

First-year Emily Johnson delivered an especially strong performance, scoring all three goals for the Yeowomen. Meanwhile, Oberlin outshot Kenyon by a substantial margin, 36-15, but couldn't capitalize on crucial scoring opportunities in overtime.

Co-captain senior Liz Breakstone was tough in goal and Oberlin's passing game was effective. Unfortunately, the Yeowomen couldn't put the biscuit in the basket when it was most needed.

"It was an unfortunate loss. However, we worked hard throughout double overtime. We showed heart and enthusiasm like never before," defender first-year Jessica Raynor said.

First-year Emily Johnson said, "We are still very optimistic about the rest of the season and the post-season to come." While this loss puts Oberlin at 4-7 overall, they are continually progressing as a team.

The Yeowomen play Earlham at home on Saturday.
