International night debuts

A host of international voices will be heard Saturday night in the Cat in the Cream coffeehouse. The coffeehouse will host an open mic as an effort to bring together students from different language and cultural backgrounds.

Although the program is open, organizer Sonya Fatah, OC '98, said she has lined up a few certainties. Two South American dancers will perform as well as artists from central Asia and Russia. Other acts are welcome and encouraged.

Fatah said the idea for the event came from a meeting she organized with language assistants and the language faculty at the beginning of the year. The group talked about ways to unite the international community on campus.

"I feel that international students are sometimes thrown to the side at Oberlin," Fatah said. "It's about perspective. Every perspective has its value." Fatah, who now works in the Study Away office, came to Oberlin five years ago as an international student from Pakistan.

The evening will also include food, ranging from quiche to sushi.

"Hopefully it will be a way of getting people who are interested in different things together," Fatah said. "It will show that there is so much more to explore and learn from."

International Night at the Cat in the Cream will be from 8 to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.
