Hernton is a poet, writer, social scientist and Professor of African American Studies at Oberlin College. Prof. Hernton has announced that he will retire from Oberlin in the Spring of 1999. This program will honor the stellar role Prof. Hernton has played in the development of the African American Studies Department at Oberlin College. 8 p.m. Oberlin College Choir: Finney Chapel 8 p.m. Fall Forward Dance Performance: Warner Center Main Space This Parents and Family Weekend event features original group and solo dance pieces created by Oberlin College student choreographers, dancers, designers and musicians. This fall student dance concert always reflects a wide range of movement styles, moods and content. Sponsored by the Oberlin College Theater and Dance Program. There is limited seating and the venue is not handicapped accessible. 8 p.m. Weldon Rising by Phyllis Nagy Senior Sarah Rooney, director: Little Theatre Because of mature themes and language, this performance is not suitable for all ages. This Parents and Family Weekend event is the first theater event of the student season. Set in NYC's meat packing district, Weldon Rising is a powerful adult drama which constructs a portrait of one violent crime - the murder of Natty Weldon's lover, Jimmy - and those affected by it. This is a provocative piece which will make us question our own responsibility in today's society. Sponsored by the Oberlin College Theater and Dance Program. It is the longest running New Musical of the season off-Broadway, and the Oberlin College performance will be the first ever regional production. Suitable for the entire family. 8 p.m. Primitive Streak Oberlin's only improv comedy group: Wilder Dyonysus (Disco) This group makes several live performances each year. Wilson Lecture "The Diversity of Life": Carnegie Root Room E.O. Wilson, Pelligrino University Research Professor at Harvard University, is recognized as one of the most important scientists living today and the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes. Mr. Wilson's visit to Oberlin is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the Mead-Swing Lectureship, the President's Office , and the Biology Department. His lecture will be illustrated with slides and will explore issues related to biodiversity, natural history and conservation. 10 p.m. Swing Night at the 'Sco Swing the night away at Oberlin's own hip discotheque - aka the 'Sco - with student deejays David Karpf and Kevin McShane and free lessons by Barb Gebhart .
