COMMENTARY

In preparation for Alcohol Awareness week we asked:

Do you think Oberlin students drink too much? How much is too much?

Alex Bumpers is a college senior.

I'm going to have to say yes. I'll put it like this: the determinant factor on whether something is too much is dependent on the responsibilty the individual has ahead of him or herself. Too much on a weekday might not be too much on the weekend. An absolute too much is when it starts to interfere with your bodily functions.

Peter Mellman is a college sophomore.

I don't think the students drink too much. But there may be undercurrents of thoughtless abuse.

Mike Polizzi is a college junior.

About four weeks in a row I've woken up to people puking in the bathroom. I've also tromped through the vomit. My friend swore he saw Beelzebub in a pool of vomit.

Angie Burkeen is a college senior.

I would have to say on the whole, no. Just certain students, not Oberlin students in general. Anything that starts disrupting your thought processes and bodily functions is too much. I think a lot of college students have a high school mentality of drinking to get drunk, not drinking to enjoy a different type of beverage. It's the difference between having a glass of white wine with dinner versus funneling a six- pack of Rolling Rock.

Mike Lyon is a college sophomore.

I think the awareness of alcohol is a good thing. I don't think students here drink enough. We have a reputation to uphold. We need more drunken brawls.

Larry Gibson is an AC in Langston.

I think that some people at Oberlin drink too much. If you're under 21, then anything is too much.

Danielle Witherspoon is a college sophomore.

No, being an RC if there was too much drinking I would have to deal with it. But so far I haven't had to deal with any alcohol problems.
