Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

Nov. 5, 5:40 p.m. Officer responded to a report from a student that his leather wallet, containing $75 in cash and five credit cards, had been taken from beneath the risers in the main dance studio of Warner Center between 3 and 4:20 p.m. The student later reported he recovered the wallet in his residence hall minus the cash.

9:35 p.m. Officer responded to a report of a temporary CDS employee who was being harassed by unwanted attention of another temporary employee. The complainant stated she did not wish to pursue a report; the matter was referred to her department head.

Nov. 6, 12:34 a.m. Officer responded to a student from Langston Hall who reported that while walking through the Bailey / Burton parking area, she was surrounded by three white males in their twenties, one of whom was described as 5'9" tall with blond hair, wearing jeans and a black jacket. The males signaled to each other with their eyes as they approached, but the student ran to the residence hall, avoiding any contact. The incident was reported to the Oberlin Fire Department.

10:54 a.m. Officer responded to a report that a piano in Bibbins, in the Conservatory had suffered some internal damage over the weekend of Oct. 30 through Nov. 1.

4:46 p.m. Officer responded to a student from Langston who was receiving unwanted telephone calls from a former boyfriend stationed in the Marines in California. the last call received was Thursday, Oct. 29. The student requested the incidents be reported to the Oberlin Police Department. The OPD Officer contacted the subject at his base and he agreed to cease calling.

6 p.m. Officer responded to a report of a theft of an Iron Horse mountain bike with chrome silver frame and purple handle grips from the rack in front of the football stadium between noon and 4:30 p.m. The bicycle, which was locked, was valued at $300.

6:04 p.m. Officer and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Barrows Hall. The activation had been caused by a malfunction in a second floor detector.

Nov. 7, 4:37 a.m. Officer responded to a request from Allen Memorial Hospital personnel to transport a student to Lorain Community Health Partners Emergency Room for a procedure not done at AMH. The student, who lives off-campus, injured her arm when she fell dancing.

4:53 a.m. Officer, while on patrol, observed smoke in the northeast wing of Langston. A contact was made with occupants of a first floor room who were also warned earlier in the week about violating the campus smoking policy.

1:42 p.m. Officer responded to a report of an injury in an organ loft at the Conservatory. A contractor fell, injuring his shoulder when a ladder upon which he was standing,slipped while he was repairing an organ. The contractor was transported to Allen Memorial Hospital via ambulance, where he was treated.

9:09 p.m. Officer and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at East Hall. (No information at time of media report release of cause of alarm.)

Nov. 8, 4:54 a.m. Officer, while on patrol, observed that trash from two 55-gallon trash bags was scattered in the rear drive of Fairchild. The east entrance to Fairchild was propped open and trash cans in the stair wells were dumped. The trash in the stairwell was picked up and the building secured. At the South Hall main entrance, an ashtray was tipped over and broken, as well as an ashtray at the east Robertson entrance to the Conservatory.

Nov. 9, 12:35 p.m. Officer responded to King / Rice parking lot to tow a vehicle that had been immobilized in excess of forty-eight hours. The vehicle's owner / operator had not contacted the Safety and Security Office, nor was the owner's identity determined for further notification prior to the tow. An unsuccessful attempt had been made for the vehicle to defeat the boot while the vehicle was immobilized.

4:06 p.m. Officer responded to Burton Hall to a request from a friend of a resident to check on his well-being. The student was contacted and found to be all right. He was advised of his friend's concern.

4:07 p.m. Officer responded to a report of a theft at Kettering Biology Department. Missing from room 119 is a strippetor, a device that automatically pipettes liquids, valued at $250.

Nov. 9, 4:02 a.m. Officer responded to a report of a harassing phone call by a resident of Bailey House. The call was determined to be an isolated incident at the time of the report and obscene in nature.

4:09 a.m. Officer responded to a report of a student, who was ill and taking medication, who needed assistance in East Hall. The student, who had become dizzy and bumped her head while walking to the restroom, was transported to Allen Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, where she was treated and released.

Nov. 10, 10:30 a.m. Officer responded to a report of a theft of a wallet at approximately 8:40 a.m. from a book bag in the first floor restroom of King. Missing is a burgundy leather wallet with an Oberlin emblem, containing an OCID, NY driver's license and room key.
