Allen Art Museum acquires important new painting for collection

Switchback, an oil painting on canvas by contemporary American artist Elizabeth Murray, joined the collection o fthe Allen Memorial Art Museum last month. The painting, which dates from 1996 and is the first workj by this important figure in the contemporary art world, is the first of Murray's work to enter the museum collection. The abstract yet somehow very lucid and organic Switchback makes a very strong addition to the contemporary works on view in the Ellen Johnson Gallery, where the painting will be on view starting Jan. 23. The painting was purchased with funds from the museum's Rousch Fund for Contemporary Art.
