September's assault of a student in Fairchild Dorm might be fading from the memories of students on campus, but it is far from reaching legal closure. Oberlin resident Delucas Lucas will stand trial in the upcoming weeks for the assault, and according to several sources, the family of the victim has recently enlisted legal counsel in the matter and started their own investigation.
Pierce Cunningham of Cincinnati is currently representing the assaulted student's family. According to multiple sources, Cunningham has commissioned private investigators to look into the assault on campus. The investigators have been talking to staff members of the office of safety and security.
As yet, no formal motions have been filed against the College in conjunction with the assault. Members of the victim's family could not be reached for comment Thursday, but the victim denied plans to sue the College last month.
In September of 1998 a female student was assaulted in her room when a man gained entry to Fairchild through an unlocked basement window. The assailant acquired a blunt object from the Fairchild Co-op kitchen, which he used to assault the victim after entering her unlocked door. The student was hospitalized, and is currently recovering away from school.
