Class of 1999 Candidate Information

Description of Class President: The class president is a member of the alumni council and returns to campus each fall for its weekend-long meeting. Each year, after the alumni council meeting, the class president writes a letter to members of the class reporting on Oberlin and on alumni activities and programs. The president serves until the first class reunion.

Description of Class Vice President: The vice president is the person to whom the president turns when he or she is unable to attend the Alumni Council meeting or write the annual letter. The vice president also is active in planning and conducting reunion activities. If for some reason the president is unable to carry out his or her responsibilities, the vice president assumes that office.

The Reunion: Oberlin has a cluster reunion system in which the Class of 1999 returns for reunions with the Classes of 2000 and 2001 every five years until its 25th reunion. The class's first reunion celebration is in May 2005. During the preceding year, the class officers will write several letters and will plan the reunion in conjunction with the class officers of the other two classes and the alumni office staff.

How Elected: A ballot containing the names of all eligible candidates will be mailed to each member of the class in mid-March. The person receiving the greatest number of votes becomes the class president and the runner-up becomes the class vice president. A tie will be resolved by drawing lots in the alumni office, with all nominees invited to attend.

Candidates:

April Davis

Hey!
I'm looking forward to graduation, but I'll never be entirely ready to leave Oberlin. This largely contributes to my desire to be a class officer.
Who am I? I am:

  • a Psychology major
  • English and Philosophy minors
  • one of those tapping Vibe people
  • also, one of those Vibe Officer types - Secretary, Damn Good Secretary
  • the wearer of a big green Caterpillar Coat
  • METAMORPHOSIS! (inside joke for Matt)
  • addicted to Chris and Dave's YAP parties
  • also addicted to '80s night, chocolate, and dancing in general.

I want to be an officer because I don't want my Oberlin journey to end on May 31. If elected, I'll do my best to see that none of ours do. And I want our first class reunion to kick ass. Any commemoration of the time we've spent here should.

    Nicole James

My Oberlin activities include: Student Union Board chairperson, Resident Coordinator, Monitor/Office Assistant, Member of the President's Committee for Long Range Planning, Member of the Advisory Committee, and participation in basketball, soccer and track. I feel qualified for the position of class president because I have been involved in every facet of the Oberlin College community, from athletics to Residential Life and Services to a member on various boards dealing with student issues.

    David S.G. Kazimir

I am a patient and approachable listener who enjoys bringing people with diverse gifts together for the advancement of the greater good - these are elements which will help me serve Oberlin College as a Class Officer. As an Organ major, church musician and Bonner Scholar, a great deal of volunteer time has been spent with several area churches, specifically with the congregations of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Amherst and as Organist and Music Director of Christ Episcopal Church in Oberlin. I served for three years as summer assistant for the Conservatory's Summer Programs Office. In my senior year I served as Senior Intern for the Conservatory's Admissions Office. I have represented Conservatory Admissions at numerous College fairs and two National Conventions of the American Guild of Organists. Since September of 1997 I have been director of the Friday Night Organ Pump.

    Peter Lutkoski

My name is Peter Lutkoski and I am running for the office of class president for the class of '99. During my years I have served on numerous committees, including faculty and staff hiring committees in the college and Conservatory, the General Faculty Planning Committee, and the Facilities Planning Committee. I have served as President and Treasurer of the Music Education Association of Oberlin, and have worked as Hall Manager, Resident Coordinator, and New Student advisor.

More important than the specific activities I have been involved with at Oberlin is the dedication to Oberlin and my peers that this involvement demonstrates. I owe a great deal to my school and fellow students for the fulfilling and rewarding experience I have had here. I see the responsibility of class president as an opportunity to reaffirm my commitment to Oberlin and to the class of 1999 by serving as your representative to the Alumni Council.

    Becky Weidman

Aside from my involvement in many activities related to the Conservatory, I have been a facilitator for Fairchild Dorm Council, a resident in Asia House and a member of the Asia House Co-op. Also, as part of an ExCo, I volunteered at the animal shelter for stray dogs. Currently, I am the co-chair of the Oberlin Music Coalition, which involves Oberlin student and the community in its free lesson programs, music classes and children's concerts.

As students at Oberlin College we form, over several years, many important bonds and relationships. As we graduate and move on to another phase of our lives, these bonds should be the foundations of who we are to become. As alumni class officer, it would be my responsibility to ensure that, as Oberlin graduates, we will continue to have the contact we need, by updating our class on continued activities and programs of Oberlin.
