COMMENTARY

It's judgement time

With Drag Ball going down this weekend, the Review needed to know whether Drag Ball is the real deal, or just a lot of hype.

Rina Madarang is a college sophomore:
If you stay there all night it's overrated. But if you just go there to check out the costumes, it's an event. The most fun is in getting ready.

Sam Weber is a college sophomore:
I think it's fun, but that depends on whether you're a party person or not. One reason I like Drag Ball more than Safer Sex Night is that for Drag Ball, they use all of Wilder, as opposed to the first two floors for Safer Sex Night.

Brooke Bocast is a college first-year:
I've never been to Drag Ball, but I'm not really looking forward to it. I feel like there's just too much hype.

Nicole Casper is a college first-year:
If I had a cool outfit I would maybe look forward to it, but I haven't had time to get a cool outfit. I'm not really excited about it because there's just too much hype.

Selena Hopkins is a college junior: I don't think it's overrated. What I like best about Drag Ball, and what I think is most demonstrative of the Oberlin campus, is that last year people were picketing outside. But they didn't push their information in people's faces and were very polite. It just shows that tolerance and diversity work both ways.

Scott Johnson is a college sophomore:
See, I do think it is overrated, but I'm trying to think of why ... I guess just 'cause all the sweat makes my make-up run. And the gender reversal intimidates me.

David Leitch is a college junior:
I despise Drag Ball. People seem to think that drag is nothing more than unshaven boys in skirts and women in their fathers' suits. There was a time when Drag was dangerous and boundary-expanding. Now it just seems tame and institutionalized.

Courtney Smith is a college first-year:
If I didn't have a lacrosse game on Sunday I'd totally get off on going. I'm really sad I don't get to go.

Jenny Wunderle is a college senior:
No, I don't think it's overrated at all. It's the biggest on-campus event, and each year it gets bigger and better, with more off-campus people attending each year.

Katy White is a college sophomore:
There are too many sweaty, smelly drunk people for my taste.

Chad Stratton is a college first-year:
I've never actually experienced Drag Ball, but I'm going all out for it this year. If it's overrated, I won't go next year. I'm looking forward to it.
