As the Seniors start to look back on their four years here, we decided to ask them to tell us what their favorite class has been.
Underclass folks, take note.
Jessica Segal is a college senior:
Hmmm... thatıs a tough one because there have been so many, but one that stands out in particular is the psychology seminar Cognitive Neuropsychology taught by Jim Tanaka. Both the assigned readings and the people who were in the class were great, which lead to thought-provoking discussions. Plus, we had great food at every class, what more could a person want?
Mara Zonderman is a college senior:
My favorite class, by far, was Constitutional Law taught by Ron Kahn. Mr.Kahn has a genuine passion for con law which helped almost everyone in the class to become excited about the subject matter. Beyond that, what really stood out about the class was just the way Mr. Kahn encouraged us to get more out of the class than just a bunch of cases, but to actually develop a concept of the way the law works.
Beth OıBrien is a college senior:
My favorite class at Oberlin was Oberlin History as American History taught by Carol Lasser. The class taught me about this townıs rich history, giving me a context for the past four years. We worked with students in the Oberlin Public Schools, coming up with creative ways to teach this history to kids who live here. It was a great way to learn and form a bond between the college and the town.
Eli Miles is a college senior:
By far it would have to be Cultural Mistrust with Prof. Ferdinand Jones! It was the most comfortable and honest class I have ever sat in on. The way the Prof. designed it allowed for open conversation. It was amazing.
Angie Burkeen is a college senior:
My favorite class has been Cell Physiology Lecture and Lab with Dr. Taylor Allen. The class really made me think about science, about how to develop solid experimental designs, and how to thoroughly examine previous experiments. After that class and the lab experience, I felt more confident in my ability to design and carry out experiments, read primary literature critically, and problem solve! Plus, Dr. Allen is a great prof. in lecture and in lab. Iıd recommend this class to any bio major who thinks they may be interested in research since this class gives students an opportunity to learn about, think about, and actually participate in scientific research
Dan Feldman is a college senior:
Vertebrate Structure and Evolution w/ Cathy McCormick. Ms. McCormick is truly an expert in the field. Iıve also never seen a professor so incredibly engaged and enthusiastic. I looked forward to each and every class.
Whitney Smith is a college senior:
The best course Iıve taken while at Oberlin was Constitutional Law with Ron Kahn. This is probably the most difficult class Iıve taken and I think I learned the most from it. The thing that stands out in my memory the most is the fact that on the first day of class we got a syllabus that had to have been 30 or 40 pages long. I knew right then my reading for that night was going to be triple that. But it was worth it great lectures, great reading, and Mr. Kahn...well, you just have to take a class with him to understand. No one should leave Oberlin without taking this class.
Dan Okulitch is a conservatory senior:
I guess the best course Iıve taken would have to be my lessons, which although not strictly a ³course² as such, have definitely been the place where Iıve learned the most. Mr. Miller, my teacher, has taught me a deep respect for music and art that what I do is meaningful and worthy. I believe he has also given me the gift of understanding my instrument and its capabilities, and in so doing has taught me how to learn. These things are invaluable, and Iıll never forget my time with him.
Devon Powers is a college senior:
The best class I have taken at Oberlin was Contemporary Literary Criticism with Pat Day. It showed me exactly what pedagogical strategies to avoid and abhor.
Star Perkins is a college senior:
Black Women in America has been the best course Iıve taken here at Oberlin. Adrienne Jones is the professor. The class stood out because it provided honest discussion amongst black and white female students that is not normally heard on this campus. As well with males.
Rebecca Cain is a college senior:
I think the best class I've taken here was Constitutional Law with Ron Kahn. It was amazing. He's so enthusiastic, and vastly knowledgable about the subject. And it's so relevant to US history and the present. It was just a generally fun class.
Clara Stemwedel is a college senior:
So many good classes. I'm torn. I think the best class I had here was American Constitutional Law with Ron Kahn. I didn't appreciate it while I was taking it, but, looking back, Con Law was the most challenging, most exciting class I took. I found myself wiping away a few tears at the end. I can't say this about any other class.
Scott Remley is a college senior:
Intro to IR with Eve Sandberg. The reason this class stands out to me is simply because it explained the world. The theories are useful at any level, so it explains everything from decision making from a cubicle to the Kremlin. That, and the fact that Eve Sandberg is probably the smartest person at Oberlin College.
Alex Johnston is a double degree fifth year:
My favorite class was electronics. It was very analytical and involved a lot of math. We got to build circuit boards and apply our knowledge to real-world applications.
Sarah Allen is college senior:
Photo with Pipo. He has opened my eyes to a world that is exciting and has no bounds. He is very supportive and nurturing to his students and is a true facet to our art department.
