RC fired over weekend party

A resident coordinator was fired this week as a result of his connection with a party in Zeke Hall. Luke Richter, a junior and RC, was overseeing a party Saturday night in Zeke after an earlier party in Stevenson had broken up. While the first party had been registered with residential life, the second after-party was not registered. Richter was breaking College policy by being present and not stopping the unregistered party.

Richter described his role in planning and purchasing alcohol for the second party. He said that the party was for several alumni who were visiting campus. The alumni pooled money to fund the party. Richter drove an alumnus and helped purchase alcohol for the party and stored it in his room. He said that all the alumni involved in organizing the party were of legal age to buy alcohol.

Although the second party was not registered with residential life, Richter and others said it was common knowledge that it was happening, even within residential life.

Richter said he was open with residential life about his role in the party, and the plans for it. "I was very open with how I set up the party," Richter said. "I wanted everything in the main lounge, out in the open, not up in people's rooms so I could keep an eye on everything. It is my responsibility to keep a safe environment."

Concern about the party was raised after a student who had been at the party needed medical attention. "It was a serious breach that affects the institution," Deb McNish, interim dean of student life, said.

Throughout the week, residential life has been meeting to deal with the situation. "We are in the process of trying to make sense of the whole thing," McNish said. On Thursday night, Richter said he was almost positive he would not have a job as an RC next year.
